Chemicals; fireextinguishing by pulverulent materials; fire, preventing in mines.-Fires or explosions, particularly in mines, are prevented or quenched by the scattering of a charge of dry basic pulverulent magresium carbonate contained in a cartridge d provided with plugs or covers e. The carbonate dissociates at the temperature of the explosion, producing a zone of carbon dioxide, water vapour, and inert magnesium oxide powder. The cartridges are preferably placed in the shot holes both in front of, and behind, the blasting charge.
