Abstract

250,532. Camp, W. S. de. April 10, 1925, [Convention date]. Compensating for wear: hand actuation; force - transmitting mechanism.-The piston rod of a fluid-pressure brake is formed in two parts secured together and excessive movement of the piston during application of the brakes causes it to be turned by the engagement of ribs thereon with a pawl mounted on the cylinder so as to increase the effective length of the piston rod. The piston rod comprises a sleeve 32 in which fits a core formed of two parts 33, 36 screwed together. The core part 33 has a square bore to receive a rod 35 to which the lever of the transmitting mechanism of the brakes is pivoted. The sleeve 32 fits into a sleeve 31 integral with the piston 27 and these sleeves and the core part 36 are secured together by a pin 37. The cup leather 28 and expansible ring 29 are held in place by a head 26 secured to the piston. The piston is grooved to form ribs 22. A pawl 49 is pivoted on the wall of the cylinder and is normally held in the position shown by a weighted arm 47. When excessive movement of the piston occurs, the pawl is engaged by the curved end of one of the ribs 22. and the piston and part 36 of the piston rod are thus turned to unscrew the part 36 in relation to the part 33 and lengthen the rod. The returning spring 43 for the piston abuts on a washer 44 which is free to turn to prevent the spring from turning the piston. Connections for operating the brakes independently by hand Include a chain attached to the end of the rod 35 which is freely slidable in the piston rod part 33.
