Abstract

Toothed wheels; racks.-Straight and helical or toothed spur and bevel wheels and racks are made with profiles based upon a path of contact of which the equation is r = a [sin (# + B) - sin B]. SPT, Fig. 1, is the path of contact, P the pitch point, O, Q the pitch circle centres, yPy the common tangent to the circles, xPx, which is a straight line, the tangents to the curves SP and PT at the point P, B the angle between the lines Px and Py, U any point on the curve of which the polar co-ordinates are r and # as shown, and a a constant. The tooth formation is such that the relative movements of the teeth facilitate their lubrication and reduce wear.
