Indicators, applications of. - A device for indicating whether the pneumatic brakes on individual cars of a train are in the applied or released condition, comprises a cylinder 4 mounted on the end of the vehicle and connected to the pipe P leading to the usual retaining valve V or to some other suitable part of the brake. system. A piston 5 is adapted to be held in the outer position shown against the resistance of a spring 7 by air pressure in the cylinder 4 so as to expose an indicator ring 17 carried by the piston rod 6 so that it may be seen for instance from the engine cab. The ring 17 in its retracted position is enclosed in a sheath 10 secured to the cylinder. The opening in the cylinder through which the piston rod 6 passes is made relatively large so that battering of the stop shoulder 16 by the piston cannot force the metal into contact with and thereby bind the piston rod.
