Abstract

249,256. Noland, B. H. Jan. 15, 1925. Spray burners. - In means comprising a balanced beam for automatically controlling the air supply to liquid-fuel furnace burners in consonance with variations in fuel supply to maintain a uniform proportion between the fuel and air delivered, the beam 13 is controlled by the joint action of a weighted carriage 17, the position of which is determined by the fuel pressure, and of an expansible container 1 communicating through a pipe 7 with the air supply pipe B. The cover 6 of the container 1 dips into a liquid seal 4 and is suspended from an end of the beam 13, which is connected by a rope 42, held taub by a weight 45 over pulleys 44, to the operating lever 10 of the steam supply valve 9 of an engine 8 operating a blower A. The carriage 17 is connected adjustably to a rod 19 pivoted to a rod 20, suspended by a ring 34 from a standard 11 and having a slotted portion 23 provided with a pin 25 pivoted to a rod 26<a> carrying a head-piece 27 bearing against a flexible diaphragm 28 clamped between a ring 29 and a cup-shaped member 30, which communicates through a pipe 41 with the fuel supply pipe. When the fuel pressure increases, the diaphragm 28 moves the rod 26<a> against the action of an adjustable spring 36 and the inward movement of the carriage 17 causes the cover 6 to fall slightly and the valve 9 to be operated to supply additional steam, equilibrium being restored by the resultant increase of air pressure in the container 1. When a number of separate furnaces in a boiler or the like are each provided with a burner supplied from common air and gas pipes, the burners are provided with air regulators adapted to be set initially to proportion the supply to their respective combustion needs.
