Description

Description Title
Method and device for warning road users
Background art
The invention proceeds from a method of warning road users in the area surrounding a motor vehicle about an imminent opening of a door of the motor vehicle. The invention further relates to a device for implementing the method.
Openin vehicle doo± cail Iéad time and again to accidents if a passenger of the vehicle carelessly opens his door.
without paying attention to objects in the surrounding area. It is moreover also possible that for example vehicles such as cyclists are situated in the blind spot of the vehicle and are not seen by the passenger in question before he opens the door.
In order to prevent for example a cyclist, a motorcyclist or a pedestrian from colliding with an open or opening vehicle door, it is known for example from DE-A 10 2005 039 opening process to be emitted prior to opening of the vehicle door. The warning signal may be for example the switching-on of an externally visible flashing warning light. The emitting of the warning signal occurs for example as soon as the engine of the motor vehicle is switched off because it is generally immediately after switching-off of the engine for example by the vehicle driver that the vehicle door adjacent to him is opened. As further possibilities that lead to the switching-on of the warning signal, withdrawing the ignition key from the ignition lock or taking hold of the door handle that opens the vehicle door are also cited. A movement towards the door handle that is detected for example by means of a suitable proximity sensor is also described as a trigger for the warning signal.
A device and a method of warning other road users about the opening of a motor vehicle door are known also from US 4,965,546. Here, for example as a signal for imminent departure from the vehicle and hence opening of a door the unfastening of a seatbelt lock is also described. As a warning signaL for example the activity of the flashing warning lights and/or of the brake lights is described.
In order to distinguish between the use of the flashing * warning lights for their original function and for their function of warning approaching road users about the opening of a vehicle door, it is known in the event of the imminent opening of a vehicle door to operate the flashing warning lights at a different frequency from the conventional warning frequency.
opening of a vehicle door is imminent. This also includes unnecessary warnings, for example when there is no object situated in the area surrounding the vehicle or merely objects, for which a warning is not necessary.
Disclosure of the invention
Advantages of the invention The method according to the invention of warningroad users in the area surrounding a motor vehicle about an imminent opening of a door of the motor vehicle comprises the following steps: a) sense the area surrounding the motor vehicle and evaluate acquired data in order to locate moving objects in the area surrounding the vehicle, b) detect whether opening of a door of the motor vehicle from inside is intended, c) emit a warning signal to the area surrounding the motor vehicle if in the area surrounding the motor vehicle a moving object has been detected and the opening of a door from the inside is intended.
By means of the method according to the invention objects that are approaching the vehicle are warned if the opening of a door of the vehicle is imminent. This makes it possible for example for a cyclist or motorcyclist who is approachifrg the vehicle to reduce his speed in time to avoid a collision with an opening vehicle door or to increase his distance from the motor vehicle so that opening of the door may occur without risk.
Furthermore, by means of the method according to the invention unnecessary emitting of a warning, for example if there is no object approaching the vehicle, is avoided. As emitting of the warning occurs after switching-off of the ignition and hence after switching-oft of the engine, the energy consumption additionally required for emitting the warning is therefore reduced.
To sense the area surrounding the motor vehicle any desired ambient sensors may be used, for example distance sensors such as ultrasonic sensors, infrared sensors, LIDAR sensors, radar sensors, capacitive distance measuring technology or optical sensors, for example video-based sensors. Data acquired by means of the sensors are evaluated for example by a suitable control unit in order to locate moving objects in the area surrounding the vehicle. The approach of an object may be determined for example by carrying out two successive measurements. If the distance of a sensed object decreases in the course of the two measurements, this object is approaching the vehicle.
In an embodiment of the invention the emitting of a warning signal occurs only if the object is approaching at the side, at which the. opening of a door of the motor vehicle from inside is intended. If an object is approaching the motor vehicle at the side, at which no door will be opened, the emitting of a warning is not necessary. The side, at which opening of a door is expected, may be detected for example by rr(eans of seat occupancy detection. The door of ff}jjci that is opened is usually at the side, at which a person is situated. It may therefore be assumed for example that the driver normally gets out through the door at the driver side, whereas a front-seat passenger will usually get out at the front-seat passenger side. If the back seat is occupied, it may equally be assumed that a passenger sitting at the driver side will get out also at the driver side and a passenger sitting at the front-seat passenger side will get out at the front-seat passenger side. Here, it is moreover also possible for it to be established for example by means of seat detection that, while the door is closed, occupancy of the seat is suddenly no longer detected and so, from this, it may be assumed that the passenger Occupying the seat has slid over to the adjacent side. In this case it may be assumed that the door that will be opened is not the door at the side, at which the passenger was originally situated, but the door at the opposite side of the vehicle. There is therefore for example no ned to warn objects that are approaching the vehicle at the driverside if it is detected that all of the passengers of the back seat will get out at the front-seat passenger side and th&dr.iven±or.. example does not intend to leave the vehicle, this being detectable for example from the fact that the ignition of the engine has not been switched off.
In a further embodiment of the invention it is investigated whether the sensed moving object is a single-or multi-tracked vehicle. The warning signal in this case is emitted only if the moving object is a single-tracked vehicle. Cycles and motorized two-wheeled vehicles for example are designated as a single-tracked vehicle in the sense of the present invention._-_The emitting in the case of the approach of a single-tracked vehicle is therefore especially important as particularly single-tracked vehicles can easily disappear and be overlooked in the blind spot. Two-tracked vehicles are usually more visible because of their greater width. What is more, two-tracked vehicles generally drive past a stationary vehicle at a greater distance than single-tracked vehicles, in particular cyclists.
In order to detect whether the opening of a door of the motor vehicle from inside is intended, it may be checked for example in each case individually or in combination whether the engine of the motor vehicle is being switched off, whether the selector lever of an automatic gear shift is being placed in P position, whether an automatic or semi-automatic parking operation has been completed, whether the light and/or the radio has been manually switched off after or shortly before the engine was switched off, whether in the case of a manual transmission a gear has been engaged after or shortly before the engine was switched off, or whether windows of the vehicle have, been manually closed afler or shortly before the engine -was -switched off.
It is therefore to be expected for example that the driver's door will be opened from inside after the engine of the vehicle has -been switched off or an automatic or semi-automatic parking operation for bringing the vehicle into a parking position has been completed. After parking, the driver will usually leave the vehicle and not remain seated in the vehicle. For the same reason, in the case of an automatic transmission the placing of the selector lever in P position is suitable as a signal that opening of the * driver's door is imminent.
In order to prevent false warnings being emitted, for example if the driver at a red traffic light switches off the engine of the vehicle to save fuel, it is preferred if, in order to detect whether opening of a door of the motor vehicle from inside is intended, a plurality of the parameters to be acquired are met.
The warning signal is preferably emitted until a passenger has left the motor vehicle through the respective door. If all of the passengers leave the motor vehicle, the warning signal is preferably emitted until all of the passengers have got out and the respective doors have been: closed again. This ensures that the door, after being closed, is not opened once more in order for example to allow further passengers to get out of the vehicle. In order to establish whether a passenger *has left the motor vehicle through the respective door of the motor vehicle, seat occupancy detection for example may be used. If it is detected by means of seat occupancy detection that. the seat is no longer occupied, it may be assumed that the passenger has left the vehicle and. the vehicle does not contain any further passenger who would like to leave the vehicle through the corresponding door.
To enable meaningful operation of the method according to the invention, i.e. emit a warning to objects approaching the vehicle, after the ignition has been switched off, it is preferred if sensing of the area surrounding the vehicle is continued for a defined period of time after the engine hasbeen switched off. For example, because a pefson usually gets out of the vehicle relatively quickly after the engine has been switched off, it is sufficient to continue the monitoring of the area surrounding the vehicle for 5 minutes after the engine has been switched off.
Should it be established at the end of the defined time that a person is still sitting in the vehicle, monitoring of the surrounding area may be continued. Limiting the w time period, during which sensing of the area surrounding the vehicle is continued after the engine has been switched off, prevents a situation where the system is not switched off and continues to operate until the energy stored in the vehicle battery is used up.
The warning signal, by means of which objects approaching the vehicle may be warned, may be for example a visual and/or audible warning signal.. A suitable audible warning signal is for example the horn of the vehicle, which emits short warning signals.
The emitting of a visual warning signal is however preferred. As visual warning signals for example warning lights on the vehicle may be activated. In this case it is particu-larly advantageous if the actuated lights, of the-vehicle light up in a different manner to their normal one.
Thus, for example the brake lights of the vehicle maybe used as a visual warning signal, wherein the brake lights may for example flash to signal the opening of a door.
Alternatively and in a preferred manner the flashing warning lights of the vehicle are used to signal the opening of a door. In this case it is particularly preferred if the flashing warning lights flash at a frequency. differing from the warning function. It is therefore possible for example for the flashing warning -. 2&gkt21aQh itk example also for a shorter flash time and at a somewhat higher repetition rate than in their warning function. By virtue of the higher light intensity and the shorter flash time the flashing of the flashing warning lights acts like a blinker and hence warns an approaching object, for example a cyclist or a motorcyclist.
It is preferred if the warning signal is emitted until all of the doors of the motor vehicle, at the passenger positions of which a person has been detected by means of seat detection, have been opened and closed again after the person has left.
It is further advantageous to limit the emitting of the warnihg signal to a maximum time period, for example to 50 seconds. This avoids an excessively high energy consumption. Furthermore, after opening of the door, approaching objects may detect from a sufficiently large distance away that the door of the vehicle is open and suitable measures may be taken by the approaching object to avoid a collision with the open door. However, by continuing the wj4g signal while the door s open an indication is given to an approaching object that for example not all of the persons have eft the vehicle yet and so it is to be expected that at a position, at which an open vehicle door is situated, a person would like to leave the vehicle.
A device according to the invention that is used to implement the method comprises means of sensing the area surrounding the vehicle and of evaluating acquired data in order to locate moving objects in the area surrounding the vehicle, means of detecting whether opening of a door of the motor vehicle from inside is intended, and means of emitting a warning signal to the area surrounding the motor vehicle if in the area surrounding the motor vehicle a moving object has been detected and the opening of a door from inside is intended.
Suitable means of sensing the area surrounding the motor vehicle are for example distance sensors as described above. As means of evaluating the acquired data in order to locate moving objects in the area surrounding' the vehicle a suitable control unit for example may be used, Instead of a control unit. it is also possible for example to integrate in the distance sensors corresponding processors, by means of which the acquired data may be evaluated.
Suitable means of detecting whether opening of a door of the motor vehicle from inside is intended comprise for example sensors for detecting whether the ignition of the vehicle has been switched off, a control, unit of a park assist system that signals the completion of an automatib or semi-automatic parking operation, ora sensor for determining the position of the automatic gear selector lever.
As means of emitting a warning, signal to the area surrounding the motor vehicle it is possible to use for example lights on the motor vehicle. In this case it is possible on the one hand to use existing lights, for example the flashing warning lights or brake lights, or alternativelyto install separate warning lamps.
The use Of existing lights in the vehicles makes it possible also to retrofit the method according to the invention in older vehicles without all too great an outlay, provided that the vehicles already contain suitable distance sensors.
Brief description of the drawings
Embodiments of the invention arerepresented in the figures and described in detail below.
Figure 1 shows a cyclist approaching a vehicle, which has just parked and is emitting a warning signal, and Figure 2 shows a time-dependent representation of a flashing signal for warning of the intention of opening a door of the motor vehicle from inside.
Embodiments of the invention Diagrammatically represented in Figure 1 is a cyclistwho.
is approachiriq a vehicle that has just parked, wherein the vehicle is emitting a warning signal to warn the cyclist.
A cyclist 1 is travelling along a row of parked vehicles 3.
A motor vehicle 5 has moved into the row of parked vehicles 3 and has just completed the parking operation.
The motor vehicle 5 in this case may have been steered for example by its driver into the parking position or by means of a semi-automatic ok fully automatic park assist system into the parking space.
The persons seated in the motor vehicle 5 have not yet left the motor vehicle 5. As the parking operation of the motor vehicle 5 has been completed, it is now to be expected that at least one door, namely the driver's door of the motor vehicle 5 will be opened to enable the driver of the motor vehicle 5 to get out of the motor vehicle 5.
Opening a door of the motor vehicle 5 at the driver side poses the risk that the cyclist 1, who is moving towards the motor vehicle 5 in the direction marked by an arrow 7, will collide with an opening door of the motor vehicle 5.
This risk exists particularly if an occupant of the motor vehicle 5 does not see the cyclist. 1, who may be situated for example in a blind spot, and suddenly opens the door of the motor vehicle 5.
In order to avoid such a collision of the cyclist 1 with an opening door of the motor vehicle 5, upon completion of the parking operation and switching-off of the engine the area surrounding the motor vehicle 5 is. sensed by means of suitable sensors. As a result of sensing the area surrounding the motor vehicle S by means of suitable sensors, for example distance sensors, for example ultrasonic sensors, infrared ñnsors, LIDAR sensors, radar sensors, capacitive distance measuring technology or optical sensors, for example video capture, it is possible to detect that an object is approaching the motor vehicle 5. On the basis of the acquired signals it is further possible to evaluate whether the approaching object is for example a cyclist 1, as represented here, or a multi-tracked vehicle, for example a motor vehicle.
From the switching-off of the engine and optionally the cornpletidn of the parking operation by the motor vehicle 5 it is detected that there is an intention to open a door of the motor vehicle from inside in order to enable passengers of the motor vehicle 5 to get out.
According to the invention a warning signal is emitted if, as represented in Figure 1, it is detected that an object, for example a cyclist I, is approaching the motor vehicle 5 and there is an intention to open a door of the motor vehicle 5. Emitting of the warning signal occurs for example as a result of the illumination of lights on the vehicle, for example the illumination of the flashing warning lights or the brake lights; Besides general ambient sensors, which are situated on the vehicle, it is possible for example to make purposeful use of blind spot monitoring in order to determine whether an object is approaching the motor vehicle 5. The blind spot for the driver of the motor vehicle S is represented in Fjgel.y.ck cte9..
situated in the region of the blind spot 9, he cannot be seen by the driver of the motor vehicle 5 Depending on the speed of the cyclist 1 there is then the danger, when the driver's door of the motor vehicle 5 is opened, that the cyclist 1 will no longe± be, able to stop or take evasive action in time and will therefore collide with the door of the motor vehicle 5.
By virtue of the method according to the invention, whereby it is first detected whether an object is,approachin the motor vehicle 5 and then further determined whether the opening of a door of the motor vehicle from inside is intended and a warning signal is emitted if an object is approaching the motor vehicle 5 and the'opening of a door from inside is intended, the cyclist I may be warned in good time and hence take measures to avoid a collision with an opening door of the motor vehicle 5. w - 14 -
To prevent a warning being emitted unnecessarily, according to the invention it is determined whether the object approaching the motor vehicle 5 is a single-or a two-tracked vehicle. If it is a two-tracked vehicle, in a preferred embodiment of the invention no warning is emitted, and if it is a single-tracked vehicle, for example a cyclist or a driver of a motorized two-wheeledvehicle, a warning is always emitted.
There is moreover no need to emit a warning if there is no person situated in the motor vehicle 5, as in this case no door may be opened from inside either. If thereis a pers6n situated in the motor vehicle 5, it is first determined, on which seat the person is situated and hence at wnicn siae tue coor of cue mutoi vehicle 5 will be --opened. If the door will be opened at the side, at which there is no object approaching the motor vehicle, there is no need to emit a warning signal. The warning signal need be emitted only if the object is approaching the motor vehicle S at the side, at which the door will be opened.
The emitted warning signal is preferably a visual signal, for example an illuminated flashing light 11. In this case it is possible for example to provide a separate warning light, by,means of which an object approaching the motor vehicle 5 may be warned. It is alternatively possible to use existing lights on the vehicle. For this purpose it is poèsible for example,. in the case of objects approaching from behind, as represented in Figure 1, to use for example the brake lights to indicate the opening of a door. For this purpose it is possible for example for the brake lights to flash in order to indicate, not that a braking operation is intended, but that the opening of a door is imminent.
It is altei'natively possible to use for example the flashing warning lights of the motof vehicle to warn an approaching object. In order to indicate that it is a case, not of an activated flashing warning light, but of a signal warning of the immediately irrirrtinent opening of a door, it is possible for example to operate the flashing warning lights at a frequency differing from the conventional frequency and/or with a different intensity.
In this case it is particularly preferred to operate the flashing warning lights at an increased frequency and with a greater intensity.
This is represented by way of etample in a diagram in Figure 2.
In Figure 2 time t is plotted on the x-axis and the light intensity i of the flashing warning light is plotted on the y-axis.
A dashed line shows the conventional flashing frequency 13 of the flashing warning light. In contrast thereto, the solid line shows the flashing frequency for warning of the imminent opening of a door. -------Unlike the normal operation of the flashing warning lights, the intensity when warning of the opening of a door is greater. Furthermore, the flashing frequency for warning of the imminent opening of a door is higher than the flashing frequency 13, at which the flashing warning light is conventionally operated. By virtue of tie higher flashing frequency 15 used to warn of the opening of a door attention is drawn to the vehicle. The illumination of the flashing warning lamps has an appearance resembling blinking and hence ensures an increased attentiveness of an object approaching the vehicle 5.
According to the invention the emitting of thewarning signal occurs until the passengers of the motor vehicle 5 have left the motor vehicle 5. To prevent the warning signal from being operated for an excessively long period of time, it is possible to emit the warning signal only for a defined period of time, with it also being perfectly possible for the emitting of the warning signal to be terminated while the door of the motor vehicle 5 is still open. A cyclist approaching the vehicle 5 can usually tell that a door is open and initiate suitable measures to avoid a collision with the door. So long as a warning signal is still being emitted, the driver of the two-wheeled vehicle may reckon for example that a person still has to get out of the vehicle and may accordingly provide a bigger safety distance when passing the motor vehicle 5.
If in the situation represented in Figure 1 it is detected that, persons intend to get out only at the front-passenger side of the motor vehicle 5, for example because the driver has not switched off the engine of the motor vehicle 5, it is possible to dispense with the emitting of a warning signal. This prevents the cyclist I from being compelled to carry out an unnecessary evasive manoeuvre.
