Diaphragms; loud-speakers. - A large diaphragm for gramophones, loud-speakers, &c., is built up of segments of the shape shown in Fig. 1 of prepared linen, aluminium, &c., united at their curved edges by gumming, sewing, riveting &c., and stiffened if desired by ribs, to form a pyramid, the periphery of which formed by the straight edges of the segments is secured at points or throughout its length on a rigid mount of metal, wood, &c. As applied to a gramophone, the diaphragm m built up of united segments stiffened by ribs n is secured at its periphery on a rigid mount D carrying supporting arms F for a cupped boss G receiving a rigid disc H. and if desired an elastic washer I. Studs on the disc H support pivots for a stylus arm K. As applied to a loud speaker, the cupped boss supports a telephone receiver and an armature connected to the diaphragm, and is carried on a pedestal stand, but in a modification the whole device is mounted in a casing b, Fig. 10, the cupped boss a being supported from the rear wall through which an adjusting screw d for the magnets passes, and the diaphragm being mounted in the front, and covered, if desired, by ,a pierced and ornamented sheet f of fabric, paper, wood, &c. The reproducing tool may be replaced by a recording tool or the telephone receiver by a microphone.
