Abstract

248,846. Carrier Engineering Co., Ltd., and Groom, S. L. Dec. 12, 1924. Coating processes; plants, arrangement of.-In applying cellulose paints to motor-car bodies &c. the paint is applied at such a temperature, and is maintained in such atmospheric conditions of temperature and humidity that it sets without rapid evaporation of its solvents or " blooming " occurring. Preferably, the temperature of the paints is reduced to between 30 and 40‹ F., that of the surrounding atmosphere to 40-50‹ F., while the temperature of the surface to be coated is between 10 and 15‹ F. higher than that of the paint. When the paint comprises solvents having a flashpoint, the paint may be applied at a temperature about 50‹ F. below that of the flash-point. The paint is preferably flowed on, or coating may be effected by dipping, the coated surface being subsequently subjected to gradually increasing temperatures up to 65‹ F. A suitable plant for carrying out the process consists of a building partitioned off into three zones A, B, C, and air-lock chambers D, D<1>. Bodies E are moved in to the zone A, and are cooled by means of a cold air current introduced bv a fan 8 through a spreader 10. The bodies are then moved to zone B, where paint is applied, and thence to zone C where the paint sets and hardens. The temperatures of the zones B and C are regulated by means of the air passing out from zone A through outlet 11, passing into zone B by legs 15, and thence into zone C through openings 16 in the partition 3. The air from zone C is returned to the air-cooling device 7 through legs 18, duct 17, and pipe 19. To raise the temperature of zone C, it is provided with heating surfaces, e.g. steam coils 29, which increase in area towards the exit end thereof. The cold air leaving zone A may be short-circuited back to the cooler 7 by pipe 21, which is controlled in conjunction with the return pipe 19 by a valve 22. The humidity of the atmosphere is controlled by passing the air through a waterspray of definite or regulatable temperature to cool and saturate it, and subsequently passing this air over steam coils to raise its temperature as may be required and to lower its relative humidity. As indicated in Fig. 2, the temperature of zones B and C is gradually increased from zone A up to a maximum of about 65‹ F. to the exit of zone C.
