Abstract

14,246. Stephen, A. June 18. Waterproofing.-Articles, such as boxes, of paper, cardboard, &c. are waterproofed by immersing them in a bath of molten wax &c., and carrying them through a heated chamber to allow the wax to be absorbed, and over a traversing surface in contact with the air or with artificially cooled air to cause the wax to set. The wax bath d has a heated air-jacket e, and may have a second jacket g of non-conducting material. The heated chamber i, through which the articles are carried on endless chains m after immersion in the bath d, is shaped so that the articles are carried upwards from the entrance, then horizontally at the highest part, and then downwards to the outlet, where they are transferred to a traversing surface, which may consist of endless chains q, running in the open air or in a cooling-chamber. The cooling may be accelerated by fans &c. The floor of the chamber i forms a tray s preferably inclined towards the bath d and ending in a spout t to enable the surplus wax from the treated articles to flow back to the bath. The tray has a jacket u connected by pipes v with the jacket e and by pipes w with gas &c. burners x. The jacket u may communicate with the interior of the chamber i, and heated air may be admitted directly to the chamber from the jacket e and from the burners x. The chamber may be covered on the outside with asbestos &c.
