Abstract

A pot hole repairing machine capable of attachment to a 180° digger, a 360" excavator, a skid steer loader or an agricultural tractor comprisies a set of cutting head attachments 11, eg 100mm to 1500mm in diameter, and a whacking and vibration plate attachment 7. The attachments are powered from the donor vehicle 3, eg hydraulically. A clean hole is firstly cut around the damaged area by lowering a rotating cutting head 11 of suitable diameter into the road surface to provide a clean, circular finished edge and a flat bottom suitable for refilling. In severely damaged sections of the highway the pot hole repairing machine can cut down to a depth where the road foundation can be removed and repaired with reinforced concrete then finished with hot tar once the concrete has set. The attachment may have a reduction drive gearbox 8 eg with a ratio of 50:1.

Description

Description
The purpose of this machine is to solve the problem of potholes on Tar Macadam roads and highways and also gravel roads.
The Pot Hole Repairing Machine would achieve this by cutting a clean hole slightly larger than the pothole to a depth determined by the machine operator.
Typically around 100mm to 150mm in a normal repair and up to 450mm to 550mm where the sub section of the road is damaged.
The hole would be cut by means of the Pot Hole Repairing Machine receiving a hydraulic feed from the donor vehicle, in this illustration -Figure 1, a 180* back hoe digger.
The hydraulic feed enters the machine at the hydraulic directional control valve (Figure 1-5)and is then transferred to the hydraulic drive motor (Figure 1-6) This transfers the hydraulic feed into a rotational drive which exits the hydraulic motor at the output shaft (Figure 1-7) where the rotational power enters the reduction drive gearbox (Figurel-8) This gearbox reduces the revolutions per minute from the hydraulic motor output shaft to the gearbox output shaft by around 50 to 1. This gives the pot hole repairing machine a desirable cutting head speed and torque.
Where the rotational power exits the reduction drive gearbox the cutting head is able to be attached to the machine via the quick release mechanjsm. This mechanism allows the cutting heads (Figure3) and the whacking plate (Figure 4) to be quickly installed and removed.
With the cutting head now attached to the Pot Hole Repairing Machine in this description the pot hole to be repaired is around 500mm outside diameter so a 600mm cutting head will be selected to perform the preparation.
The donor vehicle is powered up, the directional control valve is operated allowing the cutting head to rotate at the desired speed.
The vehicle operator performs the next operation by activating the hydraulic control valve (Figure5-1) this releases oil held in the top side of the hydraulic cylinder (Figure5-11) which allows the cutting head to rotate and be lowered into the damaged area of road surface.
The first contact between the cutting head and the road surface is made by the cutting head pot (Figure5-9) which keeps the head centralised while cuttting takes place. The cutting teeth follow, these are positioned around the outer edge of the cutting head (Figure3-9) and the cutting plate (Figure3-11) The cutting head now begins cuffing down into the road surface. The material from the surface is forced up into the head as it advances into the road surface and exits via the debris exit point (Figure3-5) The operator can raise the machine out of the hole and inspect whether the sub section of road is damaged and whether it is necessary to continue cutting down or whether to proceed to refilling.
In this description we will assume the sub section is damaged. The operator would continue cutting to a depth of around 450mm The machine would then be raised clear of the hole and any excess debris removed.
Reinforced concrete (of the quick drying type) would be added and after minutes drying time the repair could continue. If normal concrete were used the hole would have to be capped and the machine would return once the concrete had set.
In this example we will assume that quick drying concrete has been used and the 600mm hole with flat cut bottom would have been filled to around 100mm below the road surface The clean cut hole is now ready for refilling. With the pot hole repairing machine raised clear of the road surface the operator removes the cutting head by quick release mechanism and fits the whacking plate (Figure4-1) Hot tarmacadam is now added to the hole to a level slightly above the road surface. The pot hole repairing amchine can now undertake the final task of compressing the new tarmacadam into the hoie.
It achieves this by the operation of the hydraulic directional control valve releasing oil pressure from the hydraulic cylinder (Figure6-4) allowing the machine to descend rapidly, applying weight/pressure to the whacking plate. This function would be repeated several times at short intervals until the new tarmacadam top surface is level with the existing road surface. The repair can be left to cool for a short period.
The pot hole repairing machine has now completed the task and left a permanent repair to the road/highway/gravel track.

Claims (9)

  1. Claims 1. A Pothole Repairing Machine which can be fitted to any of 180* backhoe digger, 360* type excavator, skid steer loader or agricultural tractor.
  2. 2. A Pot Hole Repairing Machine with the purpose of cutting damaged areas of roads or highways slightly larger than the damaged area to a clean, circular finished edge and flat bottom.
  3. 3. A Pot Hole Repairing Machine supplied with quick release interchangeable cutting heads with a range of sizes from 100mm to 1500mm outside diameter with possibly greater diameters in future.
  4. 4. A Pot Hole Repairing Machine supplied with a whacking and vibration plate capable of packing the new road surface material into the newly cut hole.
  5. 5. A Pot Hole repairing Machine with hydraulic drive motors and hydraulic control valves with the purpose of rotating the cutting heads and creating downward force and vibration for packing the new road surface material into the newly cut hole.
  6. 6. A Pot Hole Repairing Machine supplied with cutting heads capable of cutting road surface material and road foundation material to varying depths and widths with the purpose of preparing damaged sections of roads or highways for repair.
  7. 7. A Pot Hole Repairing Machine supplied with a reduction drive gearbox with the purpose of reducing the input speed from hydraulic drive motors to a slower speed at the output side of the gearbox to drive the cutting heads.
  8. 8.A Pot Hole Repaitirig Machine supplied with jacking legs and road contact protection pads with the purpose of lowering and raising the pot hole repairing machine into and out of potholes in need of repair.
  9. 9. A Pot Hole Repairing Machine which is able to be manufactured to be attached to any of the machines described in Claim 1.
