Abstract
The tool comprises at least two drums or cylinders â jâ with picks (not shown) mounted upon a common axle. The drums rotate in opposite directions and are lowered into the pothole â aâ to cut into the ground such as a road made from tarmac, asphalt, concrete or tarmac. The drums may be mounted in a shell â nâ which has wheels â lâ to allow easier transportation. In an alternative embodiment the drums may rotate in the same direction to facilitate movement of the tool and there may also be three drums. The tool may be attached to a boom connected to a vehicle.
Description
IMPROVEMENTS IN OR RELATING TO EQUIPMENT AND METhOD OF REPAIRING POThOLES IN ROADS.
The present invention relates to improvements to patch planers, and a method of repairing damage to road surfaces, generally known as potholes in flexible (tarmac) road surfaces and rigid (concrete) road surfaces..
Roads may become damaged particularly during told spells when water on the road surface freezes, expanding cracks and fissures which lifts the top surface of the tarmac or asphalt, known as the wearing course. As motor vehicles drive over these areas of the road, the wearing course may break up and disintegrate, leaving holes in the road surface, known as potholes. Motor vehicles being driven over potholes result In further damage to the road surfaces, enlarqinq the pot tides and increasing the risk of damage to motor vehicles and may cause accidents.
Known ways of repairing this damage indude the edges of the potholes bekig cut with pneumatic or hydraulic drills with flat blade attachments, to form regular shaped edges.
The loosened tarmac debris is then removed by hand tools or excavators and the enar9ed çothoies are sprayed with molten bitumen. filled with tarmac. raked level.
leaving the new sun-ace aoove the surrounding road surface and fn(v compactea with a mécharkat rcMer or other means una the new tarmac is compadble with the surrounaing road surface.
The above procedure is labour intensive and requires several different types of equipment to oe transportea to and from the repair works. ft is unpleasant work (or the operators due to the noise me eouioment creates ana me ooerators or orniino tools neec to nave frequent breaks to prevent faboue. (.1)
When trimming of the edges to the pot-holes, the pneumatic drill is levered against the road edges and these become rounded at the top and the tarmac Is compressed and the smooth, hard surfaces make bonding difficult for the new tarmac filling, which may lead to defective repair works.
The required depth of the excavation is often exceeded because of the weight of the pneumatic drill and the difficulty in gauging the depth of the excavation from above due to the vibration through the machine and the noise made by the equipment.
Due to the time taken using hand tools, the repairs are expensive, time consuming and disrupt the flow of traffic for long periods.
Known similar equipment used in road maintenance is referred to as Patch Planers which may be attached to an excavator boom and is used to remove the tarmac surface travelling in a linear direction, The cylinder, or drum has picks attached which perform the planing works is capable of rotating around a lateral axis whilst the machine moves in a linear direction. Some manufacturers incorporate an open-drum' design to Improve the disposal of the tarmac debris.
The equipment according to the present invention to remove the damaged tarmac or asphalt wearing course, usually about 5 cm. -7 cm. deep will be described as a Rotary Patch Planer which will incorporate features of existing patch planers and will be preferably an attachment for excavators with hammer pipework.
The equipment according to the present invention may also be used to remove the tarmacwearing course of roads priortothe excavation of trenchesandisnottobe limited to the repair of potholes. (2)
The present invention relates to equipment and a method of repairing potholes in roads that will substantially reduce the labour costs, produce better quality repair works and reduce the disruption to the flow of traffic caused by these repair works.
Although the equipment and method described in the present invention relates to flexible roads, that is, roads surfaced with tarmac, similar equipment can be used to repair rigid roads, that is, roads that are surfaced with concrete.
According to the present invention, the rotary patch planer is preferably attached to the boom of an appropriate spedflcation excavator, or to any suitable boom that Is mounted preferably on a motor vehide with hammer pipework.
Rotary patch planers of different diameters may be supplied and a selection of these tools may be taken to the road repair works to be used as appropriate. Alternatively, the rotary patch planer may be capable of lateral movement to Increase the size of the repair according to the size of the pothole.
In the first embodiment of the present invention, the cylinders, or drums are driven by the hydraulics system, rotate in opposite directions about a central axis. The two cylinders are coupled together beneath a central dud containing the hydraulics pipes.
The outside of the cylinders are supported in roller or ball bearings on a frame within the machine shell In operation, the excavator with the rotary patch planer attached will be parked in dose prwdmity to one or more potholes to be repaired and the boom will be lowered until the adjustable carriage is In contact with the road surface over a pothole. The carriage is then retracted to the required depth allowing the cylinders to rest on the tarmac, the planning process is carded out until the carriage wheels cylinders are again in contact with the road surface.. (3)
In the event of the boom being able to be swung over another pothole, the process will be repeated, otherwise the excavator will be moved to the next pothole and the process repeated. Mother member of the team will prepare the excavated pothole to receive the fresh tarmac/asphalt where it will be raked level and compacted to requirements.
In some weather conditions It may be beneficial to heat the potholes prior to the repairs being carried out to soften the tarmac and improve the bonding between the existing road surface around the pothole and the new tarmac/asphalt filling.
In some cases the area of the pothole will be covered by the rotary patch planer, but where the pothole or area of tarmac to be repaired is larger, the machine can be moved laterally over the area by altering the position of the boom.
In a second embodiment of the present Invention, the rotary patch planer may incorporate three drums with picks, preferably spaced equidistant around a central drive shaft. This may be operated by the hammer pipework, an hydraulics motor or mechanical means.
In a third embodiment of the present invention, the two cylinders may be activated by the direction of hydraulic flow to rotate in the same direction whilst the drive shaft is rotated or when the drive shaft Is stationary. This will enable the rotary patch planer to be moved in a lateral direction with greater efficiency.
The present Invention will now be described, by way of example only, with reference to the following diagrammatic figures in which are shown:-Figure 1. Top view of a pothole showing the current area of repair and the improved drcular area of repair, the traditional square shape shown hatched.
