Opening-arrangements.-A receptacle having an apertured top and a cover closing the aperture has a hand-operated rod slidably and rotatably mounted at the side of the receptacle, and an arm on the inner end of the rod engaging and lifting the cover. A push rod 14 twisted at 22 as shown passes through the side 3 of the receptacle and through a slot in a guide bracket 12 so that when pushed in the rod rotates and lifts the arm 15 at its end to raise the cover 5<c> lying flush with the top. A push button 18 is screwed on at 17 to the rod 14 and a spring 20 returns the rod when released. The cover may comprise three sections 5<a>, 5b, 5c hinged at 6 to the table top 1 and at 7, 8 to one another, and when the cover has been raised and the sewing machine or the like raised into position, the cover is held folded by the engagement of a spring clip 10 thereon with an inclined pin 11 as shown.
