This invention relates to a bill file or the like having a filing pin on which the papers are impaled.

An object of the invention is to provide a file of the above type having means to protect the point of the filing pin so as to prevent injury due to external contact therewith.

Another object is to provide a filing device of the above type in which the means for protecting the point of the filing pin also serves to push the papers to be filed down over the point of the filing pin.

Another object is to provide such a device having means for readily removing the papers from the filing pin.

Various other objects and advantages will be apparent as the nature of the invention is more fully disclosed.

Although the novel features which are believed to be characteristic of this invention will be more particularly pointed out in the claims appended hereto, the invention itself as to its objects and advantages and the manner of its organization will be better understood byreferring to the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which certain specific embodiments of the invention are set forth for purposes of illustration.

Referring to the drawing more in detail, in the embodiment shown in Figs. 1 to 3 the invention is shown as comprising a base ill carrying a bracket II to which a housing I2 is secured. The housing I2 is provided with side members iii in which a rod [4 is pivotally held, as by screws 15. A filing pin [6 is secured in the rod l4 and extends upwardly through an aperture I! in the housing H. A spring I8 is disposed around the rod [4 to normally hold the filing pin in vertical 45 position against the edge 20 of the aperture H.

The aperture, however, is sufliciently long to permit the pin to be bent outwardly as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 1 when the papers are to be removed therefrom. The pin it extends upwardly and is provided with a point 2! at the top end thereof, which is adapted to receive the papers for filing in the usual manner.

The bracket H extends upwardly and is provided with a bent over flange 25 which extends 5 over the point of the pin l6 when the pin is in vertical position, so as to form a guard for the purpose specified. A clip 26 is pivotally attached to a hinge 21 which is secured to the bracket H. This clip 26 extends outwardly from the bracket II over the point of the pin I6 and normally bears against the end of the fiange 25, in which position it is held by a spring 30. The clip 25 extends outwardly past the fiange 25 and is provided with a flange 3| which is adapted to be engaged by the finger when the clip- 26 is to be depressed. The clip 26 is provided with an aperture 32 which is of suitable shape to permit passage of the point 2! of the pin It when the clip is depressed.

A sleeve 33 may also be provided on the pin it 15 for receiving the papers for filing and is adapted to be removed with the papers to form a permanent file. The sleeve 33 is provided with a bottom flange 34 which prevents the papers from falling off of the sleeve when the latter is removed from the pin [6.

In the operation of the above described de- Vice, when it is desired to apply a paper to the file, the edge of the paper is pushed over the point 2| of the pin it and under the clip 26. With the same motion the clip 26 is depressed by engaging the same with the finger, thereby causing the aperture 32 to extend downwardly over the point 2| and to perforate the paper and start the same down over the pin. The paper may then be pushed down over the pin in the usual manner.

It is to be noted that the file can be used as conveniently as an unguarded file as no additional motions are required in applying a paper 35 thereto. The hand, however, cannot come in contact with the point of the filing pin. The clip 26 serves the double purpose of guarding the point of the pin and at the same time perforating the paper and starting the same down 4 over the pin.

The papers can be removed together for permanent filing by sliding the sleeve 33 from the pin I6, the pin being bent outwardly as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 1 for this purpose. It is to be understood, however, that the sleeve 33 may be omitted if this feature is not desired. It is further to be understood that the particular construction of the clip 26 and of the housing [2 may be varied as desired.

Although a specific embodiment of the invention has been shown for purposes of illustration, various changes and modifications may be made therein, as will appear to a person skilled in the art. The invention is accordingly to be limited 55 'only in accordance with the following claims,

when interpreted in view of the prior art.

I claim:

1. A filing device for papers or the like, comprising a filing pin, a. bracket supporting said pin and a plate hinged to the bracket and extending over the point of the pin, said plate being depressible and having an opening to receive the point of the pin so as to perforate a paper which is to be filed and to start the paper down over the pin, said bracket having a rigid flange extending over the point of said pin above said plate for shielding the pin and forming a stop for normally holding said plate in position above said pin.

2. A filing device for papers or the like, comprising a filing pin, a bracket supporting said pin and a plate hinged to the bracket and extending over the point of the pin, said plate being depressible and having an opening to receive the point of the pin so as to perforate a paper which is to be filed and to start the paper down over the pin, said bracket having a rigid flange extending over the point of said pin above said plate for shielding the pin and forming a stop for normally holding said plate in position above said pin, said plate extending beyond said rigid flange to form a flange which is adapted to be engaged by the fingers for depressing the plate when the papers are to be filed.

A filing device for papers or the like, comprising a filing pin, a bracket supporting said pin and a plate hinged to the bracket and extending over the point of the pin, said plate being depressible and having an opening to receive the point of the pin so as to perforate a paper which is to be filed and to start the paper down over the pin, said bracket having a rigid flange extending over the point of said pin above said plate for shielding the pin and forming a stop for normally holding said plate in position above said pin, said pin being hinged to said bracket to be movable about a horizontal axis whereby the point of the pin is disengaged from beneath said plate to permit papers tobe removed therefrom.
