Universal joints.- In flexible couplings or universal joints for connecting shafts, provided for example with screw threads or spirals for driving vehicles or moving pathways, barrel-shaped flexible or rigid key members D engage semi-cylindrical recesses in an outer member B<2> connected to one shaft B and in an inner member A<2> connected to the other shaft A. In the form shown, barrel-shaped helical springs D are forced into the recesses so as to be slightly reduced in diameter, but have axial freedom with relation to a cover plate E, which with the assistance of washers F, F' excludes dust and water. The shafts may thus move relatively universally, axially and circumferentiasly, and also laterally to the extent permitted by the washers F, F<1>. The springs may be compressed axially, in which form the axial thrust is received upon flanged extensions of the members A<2>, B<2>. Bodies of flexible material may replace the springs D, or rigid bodies engaging the recesses over a substantial area so as to reduce wear may be employed.
