Abstract

8775. Lewis, E. W. April 8. Universal joints; clutches, friction.-A universal and sliding shaft coupling applicable in connecting the clutch to the gear-box on a motor-vehicle &c., comprises a series of balls in spherical seatings on one shaft end engaging a corresponding series of longitudinal grooves of semicircular cross-section in a sleeve on, or connected to, the other shaft end. In the form shown in Fig. 2, each shaft end is formed with recesses accommodating balls E, which engage longitudinal grooves F in a connecting-sleeve K. The balls may be retained in their recesses by rings L secured to the shafts by set-screws. A lubricant-retaining cover comprises tubular parts M, N engaging part spherical collars O and screwed on to the sleeve K, being locked by a set-screw P. In a form shown in connexion with a clutch of the type described in Specification 15,206/04, one shaft end carries a series of balls, the grooved sleeve forming part of the other shaft.
