Abstract
A safety system for installation on a passenger bus, the system consisting of sensors to detect pedestrians in a danger area and emit a warning light and/or an audible alarm as a result of the identified risk.
Description
Description
The safety system utilises technology to provide a pedestrian safety system for use primarily, though not restricted to passenger buses carrying children to and from school. Safety data exists presenting the numbers of school children who are killed or seriously injured in accidents associated with school buses and governments are striving to improve school hut safety. The method of statistical analysis and reporting for school bus accidents may be challenged to the extent of how data is categorised, however it is a fact that there are accidents where children in the UK and other countries around the word are killed or seriously injured when alighting from the school bus.
This is also not an issue for the current generation but a blight that has spanned previous generations. The proposed system herein is intended to be simple and cost effective, and to provide a preventative step which works hand in hand with underpinning regulation and education forming part of a wider strategy to improve safety.
The safety system primarily applies technology in two ways, first while the bus is stationary and second when the bus is reversing. Due to the dimensions of a bus, movement of other road vehicles, and a lapse of awareness by other road users, or by pedestrians, these are both situations where pedestrians and school children in particular are at increased risk of injury or fatality.
It is the objective of the invention to provide a safety system, which identifies pedestrians in a danger area to the rear, and may also be to the front of the bus, which triggers warning lights, and audible warning alarm, as a preventative step.
Please refer to figures 1 and 2. According to the first aspect of the invention, specifically the sensors are mounted on the rear (1) and may also be mounted on the front (2) of the vehicle. Specifically, when the vehicle is stationary and the door is opened (A), the sensors are enabled. Specifically, the sensors pick up a pedestrian arriving in a danger area to the rear, and may also be to the front of the bus. Specifically, when the sensors pick up the pedestrian, strategically positioned warning lights to the rear (3) and front (4), which may be steady burn or flashing, and may carry the internationally recognizable school bus logo, and an audible warning alarm (5) are enabled. These aspects of the system are monitored and controlled from the central processing unit (6) located with in the bus.
Please refer to figures 1 and 2. According to the second aspect of the invention, specifically the sensors are a'so enabled when reverse gear is se'ected (B). Specifically, the sensors to the rear (1) then pick up a pedestrian behind the bus when reversing and arriving in the danger area.
In a further aspect of the invention, specifically there may be a delay of 20 seconds for deactivation when the door is closed, or reverse gear deselected. Specifically, the delay is intended to ensure the danger area is clear and to allow the bus time to move away form the pedestrians.
In summary, the safety system as a combination of sensors, warning lights, and warning sounds are in both cases intended to identify entry to a danger area, which triggers warnings for school children, the bus driver, and other road users around the bus, providing an opportunity to react and avoid accident or injury.
Claims (7)
- Claims 1. Safety system to be installed on a stationary passenger bus consisting of sensors to detect pedestrians in a danger area, wherein presence triggers warning lights and audible alarm as a result of the identified risk.
- 2. Safety system to be installed on a reversing passenger bus consisting of sensors to detect pedestrians in a danger area, wherein presence triggers warning lights and audible alarm as a result of the identified risk.
- 3. Safety system as claimed in claims 1 and 2, wherein a central processing unit capable of interpreting the signal from the sensors and enabling the warning lights and alarm.
- 4. Safety system as claimed in claim 3, wherein strategically positioned warning lights, red light to rear, amber or any other colour light to front, and audible warning alarm are triggered by the central processing unit.
- 5. Safety system as claimed in any one of the previous claims, wherein the sensors are enabled when the passenger bus door is opened.
- 6. Safety system as claimed in any one of the previous claims, wherein the sensors are enabled when the passenger reverse gear is selected.
- 7. Safety system as claimed in any one of the previous claims, wherein the sensors remain enabled for a period of time until the bus has departed.
