Cop type. - In dyeing yarn cheeses, several cheeses, without their central tubes, are mounted on an upright tapered spindle detachably secured at its base to a fixed plate and are compressed thereon to a uniform density by a power press having a vertically moving ram, or by other means, disposed upon the spindle; the spindle is removed from the plate and secured in a readily detachable manner to a carrier plate holding several such spindles and the whole is placed in a dyeing kier such as that described in Specification 190,760. After treatment the spindles are removed from the carrier plate and are held, with the narrower end downwards, on a resistant floor, a sharp impact causing the cheeses to slip off the spindles ready for replacement of the central'tubes if desired. The. screwed ends 10 of fluted spindles 7 are secured to member 34 in a carrier plate 37, the cheeses resting on rubber blocks 14 and being retained in the compressed condition by similar blocks 16, metal plates 28 and pins 30 which pass through holes 31 in the spindles. To avoid damage to the spindles their narrow ends may be provided with a cup which receives the shock of the impact when the cheeses are displaced from the spindles.
