mcsne assignments,
to The Carpenter-Hiatt Sales Company, Chicago, Ill., a corporation of Colorado Application April 23, 1931, Serial No. 532,228
3 Claims.
This invention relates to fruit packing apparatus, and has been shown as embodied in a facing form equipped withY clamps for holding a liner properly positioned during packing. According ,to the preferred embodiment of this invention, each clamp comprises a member pivoted to the flange of the facing form and provided with a spring tending to press its active end into engagement with the rim of the facing form, or to clamp .the liner against the rim. Other forms of this invention have been disclosed in the applicants co-pending application Serial Number 525,097, led March 25, 1931.
The invention accomplishes numerous objects, chief among these being the provision of apparatus which speeds up the process of packing fruit or the like and which may nevertheless be simply and cheaply constructed. Prior attempts at providing clamps have been unsatisfactory because v either the clamps would not work well, or their use involved the Waste 4of too much time in applying or removing them. Also there were usually separable parts which soon became injured or lost.
With these and various other objects in view, the invention may consist of certain novel features of construction and operation, as will be more fully described and particularly pointed out in the specification, drawing and claims appended hereto.
In the drawing, which illustrates an embodiment of the device, and wherein like referencev characters are used to designate like parts,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the facing form showing the liner in position thereon;
Figure 2 is a fragmentary section through the line 2-2 of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a fragmentary plan View of a slightly modified form of the invention;
Figure 4 is a fragmentary sectional View of still another modification of the invention; and
Figure 5 is a fragmentary plan view of a further modification of the invention.
Although this invention may take many forms, only four have been chosen for illustration. In -all of these the invention comprises the combination of certain attachments with the facing form 10. This facing form is used in a way similar to that in which it has been formerly used. The top choice fruit is placed on the face of the form, a liner 12 is slipped over the rim and is filled up, a basket is slipped over the liner, and the assembly is inverted and the facing form removed, leaving the liner in the basket and the fruit packed therein with the upper layer uniformly' and attractively spaced. The facing forms are provided with a rim 14 for centering the liner 12, which may be pressed down on the -outside of the rim. It is desirable also to provide a flange 16 to aid in handling the facing form with the basket and for the purposes hereina-iter described.
In the forms shown in Figures 1 and 2, a clamp base 18 is secured to the flange 16 as by suitable rivets 20. A clamp 22 is pivotally mounted on the clamp base 18 by means of a pin 24. Clamp 22 is provided with an active or clamping end 26 and the handle 28. A spring 30 is provided as shown for normally pressing the clamping end 26 of the clamp member 22 toward the rim 14 of the facing form 10. This spring is preferably retained in position by means of a pocket in each of the members 18 and 22 though a pin may be used in one or both of the members if desired. If desired, guide pins 32 may be provided with beveled inner faces as shown for guiding the liner 12 into position.
The form shown in Figure 3 is quite similar to that shown in Figures 1 and 2, except for a slightly different arrangement of the parts. Thus the clamping member 34 is pivoted to a pin 36 which is mounted on the flange 16 at a point spaced from the clamp base 38 which in this instance merely forms a pocket for the spring 40. The spring may be retained in place by a pocket in the member 38 and a pin 42 on the clamping member 34.
rllhe form shown in Figure 4 is almost identical with that shown in Figures l and 2, except that the clamp is mounted vertically instead of horizontally. Thus the clamp member 46 is pivoted to a horizontal pin 48 in the clamp base 50, which is secured as by means of rivets 52 to the flange 16. In all of the forms shown, it is preferred that two diametrically spaced clamps be provided.
In all the forms shown in Figures 1 to 4, the liner may be inserted rst in one clamp while it is held released, and then in another clamp while it is held released, or it may be set in position and both clamps opened simultaneously to permit the liner to drop in place. Whatever the manner of insertion, once the liner is in place it is securely held there by the ciamps at opposite points of the facing form.
The form shown in Figure 5 is the simplest of all the forms. It comprises merely a clamping member 56 pivoted by a suitable pin 58 to the ange 16. A reinforcing plate 60 may be used under the flange in this and all the other modifications, if desired, and of course a similar reinforcing plate could be used on top of the flange. No spring is provided on this handle and so the handle may be turned to the open position and left there so that both hands may be used for insertion of the liner. When it is properly placed, the handle must be positively turned to the locking position. For some types of liner this would be found to be a more convenient type of clamp than the others. Because there is no spring, the clamp must be provided with a cam-shaped clamping surface 62 in order that the clamp may be selflocking.
It is to be understood that many other embodiments of the invention, including some in improved form, will be apparent, and in the course of time more Will be devised by those skilled in the art. It is not desired that this invention be limited to the details described, for its scope includes all such forms or improvements as come within the spirit of the following claims,construed as broadly as the prior art will permit. Specifically it might be pointed out that the clamps could be mounted underneath the facing form and extending therethrough so that the liner could be inserted on the inside of the rim 14 and clamped thereto.
What is claimed is:
1. The combination of a facing form having an upstanding rim thereon, and means secured to said form for clamping a liner by a pinching action against said rim at a plurality of isolated points in positions substantially diametrically opposed across said facing form.
2. The combination of a facing form having an upstanding rim adapted for the reception of a liner therearound, and two separate clamps each pivotally mounted on said facing form and each having a clamping portion adapted to clamp said liner by a pinching action against said rim, said clamps being independently operable and spaced from each other by at least a third of the circumference of the rim.
3. The combination of a facing form having an upstanding rim adapted for the reception of a liner therearound, and two separate clamps in positions substantially diametrically opposed across said facing form, each pivotally mounted on said facing form and each having a clamping portion adapted to clamp said liner by a pinching action against said rim, said clamps being independently operable.
