Actuating-mechanism.-A control apparatus for intermittently and automatically opening one or more taps at predetermined periods, keeping them open for predetermined periods and then automatically closing them, applicable particularly to the drawoff taps of a gas washing and scrubbing machine, as described in Specification 245,814, [Class 55, (ii), Gas manufacture, &c.], comprises a wheel A, Figs. 2 and 7, which makes one revolution in, say, 24 hours, being driven by two ratchets b<1>, b<4> from the driving shaft B of the gas washer. Two pins a, a' on this wheel A disengage two catches a<3>, a<2> in succession from a slidable bar a<5> which then removes a stop a' and disengages a projection a<8> on a mutilated toothed wheel a<9>. This released wheel is given an initial turning movement by the spring-controlled lever a<10>, and then a complete revolution from a continuously-rotating wheel on the shaft B; this causes a tappet or crank a<14> on the mutilated wheel a<9> to engage a cam surface a<15> on the slidable bar a<5> an impart a reciprocating movement to the same to open and close the tap or taps. For this purpose the taps a<20> are connected by means of slotted arms a<19> with adjustable slotted arms a<18> on an extension a<16> of the slidable bar a<5>.
