Abstract

A tool, intended for hand use, for chamfering plastics pipes comprises a main body 5 and locators 2 for locating and supporting an end of the pipe for rotation relative to a cutting edge 1 for chamfering the outside of a pipe. A further locator 4 may be provided for flexible larger diameter pipes. The locators may comprise a plurality of round edges having a radial alignment similar to the radius of the inner and outer edges of the pipe to be chamfered and preferably comprise round pins. The cutting edge may have a negative rake and may be produced using hardened steel. The tool may include a tapered edge 6 that can be inserted into a pipe and rotated to produce an internal chamfer. The tool may have provision for applying torque to the tool. The tool may be used with 31.75 to 50mm waste pipes intended for use with push fittings.

Description

* 2455882
Title of invention
Small diameter plastic waste pipe chamfering tool
Field of the invention
This invention provides a method of chamfering plastic waste pipes for use in push fittings to help prevent the seal in the fitting being damaged during assembly and to help prevent blockages in the pipe during use
Background of the invention
When using plastic waste pipes in conjunction with push fittings' it is helpful to chamfer the outside edge of the pipe so that the seal in the fitting is not damaged during assembly. Current methods of achieving this may be to use an angle grinder to chamfer the pipe or a file, both of these methods are awkward and may easily lead to personal injury. Also, chamfering the inside edge helps prevent build up in the pipe during use which may lead to blockages.
Object of the invention The object of this invention is to produce a safe hand device that can be used to chamfer plastic waste pipes to be used with push fittings' to help prevent the seal in the fitting being damaged during assembly and to help prevent blockages in the pipe during use
Summary of the invention
The invention is a solution to chamfering plastic waste pipes comprising of: i) A main body section (5) with shaped handle and a machined tapered edge (6) to chamfer the inside of the pipe ii) An angled cutting tip (I) iii) Location pins (2) to locate the pipe onto the cutting edge iv) An extra pin (4) to provide support for larger and more flexible pipes Advantages of the invention The advantage of this invention is to produce a safe hand device that can be used to chamfer from 1 /4 inch up to 50mm plastic waste pipes to be used with push fittings' so that the seals are not damaged when connected together and to help prevent blockages in the pipe during use Preferred optional features The product should be made from steel The cutting tip should be hardened and have a negative rake angle The radial alignment of the inner and outer edges should be on a diameter of 26.5mm and 31mm respectively to allow for variations in the size from 1 1/4 up to 50mm waste pipes.
Brief description of the drawings:
Figure 1 is a top elevation of one example of the tool in accordance with the invention Figure 2 is a sectioned view of one example of the tool in accordance with the flVCfltion
Detailed description of the drawings
A tool for chamfering plastic pipes comprising of a main body section (5) with a tapered edge (6) for chamfering the inside of the pipe provided with an angled negative-rake cutting edge (I) and round pins (2) located about the same centre point (3) and aligned so that the surfaces of the pins can provide support around the cutting edge for the pipe being chamfered. The tool is provided with an extra edge (4) to provide support and prevent deformation of flexible larger diameter pipes during chamfering. The tool is shaped to provide a method of applying torque to the tool (5).

Claims (1)

  1. Claims I) A tool for chamfering plastic pipes comprising of a main body section provided with a method of locating the pipe onto a provided cutting edge so that when the pipe or tool is rotated the cutting edge removes an angled section from the pipe resulting in a chamfer around the pipe.
    2) A tool as claimed in claim I where the main body is provided with a tapered edge that can be inserted into the pipe and rotated to produce an internal chamfer 3) A tool as claimed in claim I where the method of location is by way of a series of round pins located about the same centre point as the cutting edge and aligned so that the surfaces of the pins can provide support around the cutting edge for the pipe being chamfered 4) A tool as claimed in claim I where the method of location is by way of a plurality of round edges with a radial alignment similar to the radius of the inside and outside edges of the pipe to be chamfered 5) A tool as claimed in claim I provided with at least one extra edge protruding from the main body to provide support and prevent deformation which would result in the cutting edge removing excessive material and becoming stuck' in the surface of the pipe when being used with flexible larger diameter pipes 6) A tool as claimed in claim I where the cutting edge is provided with a negative rake angle to prevent the cutting edge removing excessive material and becoming stuck' in the surface of the pipe.
    7) A tool as claimed in claim I designed with a method of applying torque to the tool 8) A tool as claimed in claim I where the cutting edge is produced using hardened steel
