Description

A PORTABLE POLY (POLYETHYLENE) PIPE BORER
FIELD OF THE INVENTION
This invention relates to the coal seam gas industry and more specifically but not exclusively to a poly (polyethylene) pipe borer apparatus to machine poly pipes of different internal diameters or bores to be joined.
BACKGROUND ART
The use of polyethylene or commonly, poly pipe in the burgeoning coal seam gas (CSG) industry in Australia is well known. Prior art poly pipe is often supplied with different wall thicknesses. This makes heat welding pipes of different internal diameters unsafe due to non uniform heat transfer resulting in an unacceptable join pursuant to Australian and most universal safety standards. Australian standards for the industry specify that different wall thickness pipes are not allowed to be welded. All welded pipes must be of the same wall thickness to a specified length depending on internal diameter and particular application. The pipe outside diameter does not change. Thinner walled pipe is used to save costs where large pressure is not involved whereas thicker walled pipe is used in high risk traffic areas such as under roads. Most coal seam gas plants are also located in remote sites remote from the pipe manufacturers and suppliers. Currently, short lengths of pipe are cut; face machined and bored to a predetermined internal diameter as transition or joining pieces off site. They are then welded onto longer lengths of poly pipe on site. This results in a huge wastage as only sixty to seventy percent (60%- 70%) of the machined poly pipes prepared off site are used. The prior art includes extra welding which is costly and time consuming.
It is therefore an object of the invention to provide a solution whereby lengths of poly pipe can be machined on site to avoid lengthy delays in supply, transport or problems associated with incorrectly sized components. It is another objective that there is less welding involved to comply with testing requirements with a reduction in safety concerns and wherein the speed and time saved in being able to join poly pipes of different wall thicknesses on site are the invention's greatest advantages. STATEMENT OF THE INVENTION
In one aspect the invention resides in a portable polyethylene or poly pipe borer apparatus comprising in combination:
a pipe borer having a rotary cutter;
the borer adapted to be installed and removed from a pipe joining frame for holding in position poly pipes to be joined;
the cutter adapted to be advanced against an open end of a first poly pipe held in the frame; wherein on boring the first poly pipe , the borer is removed and a second poly pipe located in the frame to be joined to the first pipe.
Preferably, the pipe borer is powered by a hydraulic motor.
In the alternative, the pipe borer is powered by an electric motor. In yet another version, the pipe borer is hand powered.
Preferably the pipe borer and rotary cutter are advanced as a unit against the open end of the first poly pipe.
In the alternative, the pipe borer is stationery in the frame and the cutter mounted on an extendible shaft and advanced against the open end of the first poly pipe.
Preferably, the pipe joining frame is a jig comprising a pair of opposed hinged cage sections adapted to encircle and grip poly pipes of substantially same outside diameters to be joined together.
Suitably, the pipe borer is of a size and configuration consistent with the size and configuration of poly pipe being joined wherein the pipe borer is readily removed from and replaced with the second poly pipe in the joining frame.
Suitably, the cutter has one or more adjustable blades wherein the size of the bore can be varied. In another aspect, the invention resides in a method of joining poly pipes of different wall thicknesses using the pipe borer apparatus as hereinbefore described including the steps of:
(a) securing a first poly pipe in the joining frame;
(b) installing the pipe borer in the frame;
(c) boring the first poly pipe to match the wall thickness of a second poly pipe to be joined;
(d) removing the pipe borer from the frame;
(e) securing the second poly pipe against the bored first poly pipe, and
(f) joining by heat welding or other means the first and second poly pipes.
In another aspect, the invention resides in poly pipes joined by use of the poly pipe borer apparatus or by the method as herein before described.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF DRAWINGS
In order that the invention be more readily understood and put into practical effect, reference will now be made to the accompanying drawings wherein:
Figure 1 shows a preferred poly pipe borer apparatus according to the invention.
Figure 2 shows the borer on completion of boring a pipe.
Figure 3 shows replacement of the borer with a pipe to be joined. DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
In the interests of clarity and to avoid any ambiguity, the numbering of identical parts and components in all views are consistent to allow cross referencing between the drawings.
Referring to Figure 1, there is shown a portable polyethylene or poly pipe borer apparatus 10 according to the invention. The pipe borer 12 powered by hydraulic motor 13 has a rotary cutter 14 and is installed and removed from the pipe joining frame 15 adapted for holding in position poly pipes to be joined. The cutter 14 is advanced against an open end of the poly pipe 16 held in the frame. On completion of boring the first poly pipe 16, the borer 12 can then be removed as shown in Figure 2 and a second poly pipe 18 located in the frame to be joined to the first pipe 16 shown by Figure 3. The pipe borer is powered by a hydraulic motor and the pipe borer 12 and rotary cutter 14 are advanced as a unit against the open end of the first poly pipe 16. In the alternative, the pipe borer can be stationery in the frame and the cutter mounted on an extendible shaft and advanced against the open end of the first poly pipe. The pipe borer 12 is of a size and configuration consistent with the size and configuration of poly pipe being joined wherein the pipe borer 12 is removed from and replaced with the second poly pipe 18 in the joining frame. The cutter 14 has one or more adjustable blades (not shown) wherein the size of the bore can be varied.
Figures 2 and 3 show the method of joining poly pipes of different wall thicknesses using the apparatus of Figure 1. A first poiy pipe is secured in the joining frame 15. The pipe joining frame is a jig comprising a pair of opposed hinged cage sections 15a, 15b adapted to encircle and grip poly pipes of substantially the same outside diameters to be joined together. The pipe borer 12 is installed in the frame and used to bore the first poly pipe 16 to match the wall thickness of the second poly pipe 18. In Figure 2 the frame 15 is opened to remove the pipe borer 12 from the frame. The second poly pipe 18 is secured against the bored first poly pipe 16, which is then joined to the first poly pipe 16 by heat welding as shown in Figure 3. VARIATIONS
