PORTABLE DEVICE FOR CUTTING AND BEVELLING A PLASTIC PIPE
FIELD OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to a portable device for cutting a water or sewer pipe and bevelling the ends thereof. In particular, the device can be used to cut and bevel pipes 10 located below ground.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
15 In the repair of a pipework system it is necessary to cut and joint lengths of pipes. Conventionally this has been done using a cutting apparatus manipulated by an operator and requiring repeated settings and adjustments to achieve the desired cut.
US 4,430,913 discloses a pipe cutting device comprising a holder for receiving a pipe to be 20 cut. The device further comprises cutting and bevelling means on separate blades that are rotatable around the pipe thereby enabling the device to cut and bevel the pipe in a direction transverse to its length. The device disclosed in US 4,430,913 is heavy and cumbersome to use in the field. Moreover it requires a hydraulic system to operate the cutting and beveling procedure. The device disclosed in US 4,430,913 is primarily intended for cutting larger 25 metal tubes and is not applicable in environments where repairs are needed of pipes, such as PVC pipes, buried in the ground.
Typically water or sewer pipes are manufactured of a polymeric material, e.g., polyvinyl chloride (PVC), wherein one end of the pipe is a female end defining a socket and the other 30 end of the pipe is a male end having a bevelled or chamfered outer circumference. The pipes are typically manufactured in standard diameters and lengths and several of the pipes may require cutting in the field to provide pipes having the necessary length.
A variety of PVC pipes are used in the domestic and business situations for the removal of 35 wastewater and soil waste or the supply of clean water. Typically such pipes have a diameter of 110 mm or 150 mm. Other sizes of plastic pipe may be used within a building for the supply or removal of water.
2 DK 177586 B1
Commonly a rubber gasket is used to seal the joint where two pipes are connected. The gasket is captured within an annular pocket formed on the female end of one of the pipes.
The male end of the other pipe engages the radially inner surface of the gasket to form the 5 seal. The male end of a standard length pipe will typically include a taper or bevel so that the gasket is not rolled out of the pocket or damaged when the male end is inserted during the installation process. When a pipe must be cut to a custom length in the field, the original chamfered or bevelled male end is typically cut off and a new male end is formed. Workers will often try to bevel the edge of the male end of such custom length pipes in the field to 10 avoid damage to the gasket. The use of hand held cutting or grinding tools, however, will often result in an irregularly bevelled edge.
It is an object of the invention to provide an apparatus that simplifies pipe cutting and beveling of pipes located below ground, e.g. in relation to repair work. Hence, the object of 15 the present invention is to provide a new portable device especially intended for cutting and bevelling tubes or pipes, in particular plastic tubes/pipes, by means of which device the problems described above are avoided and which device is easy to use in the field, while the cutting or bevelling takes place quickly and accurately.
20 In this way, a reliable and cheap manually operated device is provided for cutting and bevelling a tube/pipe, in particular a plastic tube/pipe.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
25
The present invention provides a portable pipe cutting device that securely holds a pipe for working the pipe in a safe and controlled manner and which can be used to cleanly and precisely cut and bevel pipes, in particular PVC pipes.
30 The device of the present invention may be used to cut and prepare new pipework. It may also be used in environments where repairs are needed and the ends of the pipe are buried in the ground. Up till now, the only method of repair was to use a hand saw to cut the pipe buried in the ground. Apparatus according to the invention may be used to rapidly cut and bevel the pipe buried in the ground.
3 DK 177586 B1
The device of the present invention comprises a holder for receiving a pipe to be cut, and cutting and beveling means being rotatable with respect to the pipe to perform a cutting and beveling procedure in response to appropriate force exerted by the user on the cutting and 5 beveling means.
The cutting and beveling means is typically a cutting tool having a cutting edge and a separate bevel-cutting edge. When the cutting tool is pressed against the surface of the pipe it sequentially cuts and bevels the pipe end.
10
Specifically, the present invention provides a portable pipe cutting device comprising: • a holder (2) for receiving a pipe to be cut, which holder can be closed to clamp the pipe in the position to be cut; • cutting and beveling means (5) being rotatable around the pipe through drive means 15 (6), thereby cutting and beveling the pipe transverse to its length, wherein the cutting and beveling means (5) comprises a blade (13) having a cutting edge and a separate bevel-cutting edge; • actuation means (7) for pressing the cutting and beveling means (5) towards the surface of the pipe, wherein the actuation means (5) has a first toothed rod (8) that is 20 movable in an axis parallel to the axis of the pipe, said first toothed rod (8) mating with a toothed wheel (9) that mates with a second toothed rod (10) provided with a cutting and beveling blade (13) in the end of the rod and arranged perpendicularly to the first toothed rod, whereby actuation of the first toothed rod (8) results in movement of the second toothed rod (10) towards the surface of the pipe 25 characterized in that the actuation means (7) comprises a support ring (11) at the circumference of the pipe and moveable along the axis of the pipe, said the support ring (11) may be forced in axial direction of the pipe towards the area to be cut and beveled, whereby it forces the first toothed rod (8) forward along the axis of the pipe thereby forcing the second rod (10) with the cutting and beveling blade (13) in the end towards the surface of 30 the pipe resulting in a cutting and beveling procedure during the continuous rotation of the actuation means around the pipe.
4 DK 177586 B1
The drive means may be manually powered or may be powered by any selected one of a number of different power sources. The power source may be fixed or removable. A particularly preferred power source utilizes an electric power drill.
5 The cutting and beveling means comprises a blade having a leading edge to cut the pipe at the cutting position and a trailing edge on one or both sides set back from the leading edge and axially spaced therefrom such that the or each trailing edge produces a partial cut in the outer surface of the pipe axially spaced from the cutting position.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
Overall views of a pipe cutting device (1) in accordance with the present invention are shown in FIGS. 1 and 3, whereas Figure 2A, 2B, and 2C are enlarged views of important 25 parts of the device.
In the embodiment shown in Figures 1-3 the device (1) includes a holder (2) for receiving a pipe (3) to be cut, which holder (2) can be closed with a clamp (4) to fix the pipe (3) in the position to be cut. Moreover, the device comprises a cutting and beveling means (5) being 30 rotatable around the pipe through drive means (6), thereby cutting and beveling the pipe (3) transverse to its length. In the shown embodiment drive means (6) may be powered by an electric power drill through a shaft (6a) that mates with the drive means. Such drive means (6) is often referred to as a worm gear. Actuation means (7) are provided for pressing the cutting and beveling means (5) towards the surface of the pipe. The cutting and beveling 35 means (5) has a first toothed rod (8) that is movable in an axis parallel to the axis of the pipe DK 177586 B1 5 (3), said first toothed rod (8) mating with a toothed wheel (9) that mates with a second toothed rod (10) carrying a cutting edge and a separate bevel-cutting edge/blade (13) in the end of the rod and arranged perpendicularly to the first toothed rod (8), whereby actuation of the first toothed rod (8) results in movement of the second toothed rod (10) towards the 5 surface of the pipe (3).
As shown in Figures 1 and 3 the actuation means (7) comprises a support ring (11) at the circumference of the pipe (3) and moveable along the axis of the pipe (3). When the support 10 ring (11) is forced in axial direction of the pipe (3) towards the area to be cut and beveled it forces the first toothed rod (8), which touches the surface of the support ring (11) through a roller (12) or other means, forward along the axis of the pipe and hence forces the second rod (10) towards the surface of the pipe (3). Since the second rod (10) carries the cutting and beveling blade (13) in the end of the rod facing the pipe the cutting and beveling blade 15 (13) will be forced towards the pipe (3) and result in a cutting and beveling procedure during its continuous rotation.
For the sake of completeness it should be noted in relation to the above embodiment that the holder (2) is in a fixed position relative to the pipe, whereas the actuation means (7) can 20 moved in axial direction of the tube, while the cutting and beveling means (5) is rotatable around the pipe. In the shown embodiment this is achieved by clamping the pipe in the holder (2) and using as drive means (6) a worm gear (18) to rotate a connection piece (14) onto which the cutting and beveling means (5) is mounted. Concerning the actuation means this works through a gear (15) that moves through a handle (17) the support ring (11) in 25 axial direction through a set of toothed rods (16a, 16b).
Concerning enlarged views reference is made to Figure 2. In Figure 2A there is shown an enlarged view of the actuation means (7). The actuation means is connected with the holder (2) and is not rotatable around the pipe (3). Figure 2B shows an enlarged view of the cutting 30 and beveling means (5) being rotatable around the pipe. Figure 2C shows the drive means (6) that is connected with the cutting and beveling means (5); accordingly the cutting and beveling means (5) is rotated when the drive means (6) is rotated.
