Abstract

244,791. Kiwull, W. Dec. 17, 1924, [Convention date]. No Patent granted (Sealing fee not paid). Propelling by rotary cylinders and the like using Magnus effect. - In rotor installations operating with a Magnus effect, the rotary member is adjustable in position and configuration preferably by forming the body of strips of flexible material. The mast 1 of a ship is enclosed by a tube 5 and slidable sleeve 3 and slidable sleeve 3 which are connected by flexible strips. The tube 2 is mounted on a base 6 in a manner providing for adjustment of the inclination, and is rotated by a suitable motor. By sliding the ring 3, the strips 4 are given shapes as A, B, C providing different circumferential velocity for a given speed of the driving motor. The gaps between the strips 4 are stated to increase the propelling effort, and the strips are provided with guide surfaces for this purpose. The form may also be varied by bulging the strips inwardly at certain parts of their length. The strips may be turned end-on, to reduce resistance when not in use. The motor may be utilized in harbour, for driving windlasses and like auxiliary machinery.
