Abstract

244,407. Quarzlampen-Ges. Dec. 10, 1924, [Convention date]. Void [Published under Sect. 91 of the Act]. Examining materials by ultra-violet rays.-An apparatus for testing objects (e.g. distinguishing zinc white and lead white, different kinds of papers, fats, oils, etc.; identifying coloured substances, metals, and chemicals by their differing fluorescence ; examining pearls; carrying out bleaching experiments and effecting qualitative determinations by fluorescence ; or for criminological investigations) comprises a ventilated light-tight compartment a containing a lamp b (e.g. a quartz lamp) emitting ultra-violet rays, and an inspection compartment h separated by a partition g which is adapted itself or by a filter f to transmit ultraviolet rays only. The objects under examination are on a support m and are viewed through a slot which may be provided by movable curtains i. The partition g is preferably hinged so as to admit the whole light from the lamp when desired (e.g. for bleaching experiments) on to the objeert. For testing the transparency of different substances a mirror n may be arranged below the support m, or for photographic records a sensitized plates o is fitted. An additional vertical wall k of the compartment a may be fitted with a similar filter l, and hinged for direct horizontal action of the whole light or ultra-violet rays only, on to larger surfaces to be examined. To prevent any reflected image of the burner itself, glass filters which are matted, ribbed, frosted, or figured in a plastic condition may be used.
