Abstract
696,675. Measuring radiation photo-electrically. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. Feb. 16, 1951 [Feb. 17, 1950], No. 4125/50. Class 40 (iii). The particle concentration in a liquid, or the concentration of a solution is determined by projecting a beam of light into the fluid and measuring the intensity of the fluorescence produced. As shown, ultra-violet rays from a lamp 4 mounted in a chimney 5 pass through a filter 8 and collimating lens 9 into a vessel 1 containing the liquid under test. The liquid enters through an inlet 2 and leaves through an outlet 3 large enough to keep the liquid level substantially constant. At one side of the vessel is a photo multiplier tube 10 which receives the fluorescence through a window 11. A stop (not shown) is provided to cut out radiations reflected from impurities in the bottle and a filter 12 cuts out reflected primary radiations. Indicating and/or recording apparatus may be permanently connected to the photo-sensitive element or may be connected at will or automatically at predetermined intervals. For testing purposes a lamp 13 lit by a transformer and barretter lamp may be mounted to one side of the tube and provided with filters to illuminate the photo-tube.
