Abstract
A sign 10 for a display stand comprises an elongate sheet 11 of flexible substrate material arranged to fold longitudinally inwardly of itself along four respective transverse lines 12, which are spaced apart longitudinally of the sheet 11, the sheet being cut across each transverse line 12 by respective pairs of slits which extend longitudinally of the sheet 11 and define respective regions 14 which fold outwardly of the sheet 11 when the substrate is folded inwardly to form four respective transverse through-passages 15. The display stand comprises four uprights 20, and the sign 10 is slid onto the upper end of the uprights 20 of the stand, such that the uprights 20 extend through respective ones of the through-passages 15.
Description
Sign for a display stand or the like This invention relates to a sign
for a display stand or the like, and to a stand incorporating the same.
Stands are widely used in retail outlets to store and display goods. One such stand comprises a plurality of horizontal shelves supported at their corners by respective upright members. The vertical position of each shelf can be adjusted by engaging the shelves with respective ones of a series of apertures formed longitudinally of the upright members.
It is often desirable to be able to attach signs to the stands, for example to display the price of the products thereon. Typically, this is achieved by simply attaching an elongate sign between two adjacent upright members using tie members, such as cable ties.
A disadvantage of the above-mentioned arrangement is that it looks unsightly, particularly as the sign can twist or tear. Furthermore, the sign is relatively expensive in construction, since a thick and self-supporting material needs to be used.
We have now devised a sign which alleviates the above-mentioned problems.
In accordance with the present invention, there is provided a sign comprising an elongate sheet of flexible substrate material arranged to fold longitudinally inwardly of itself along two respective transverse lines, which are spaced apart longitudinally of the substrate, wherein the substrate is cut across each transverse line by respective line or lines which extend generally longitudinally of the substrate and thereby define respective regions arranged to fold outwardly when said substrate is folded inwardly to form respective transverse through-passages for receiving respective portions of a support structure.
A sign in accordance with the present invention is simple and inexpensive in construction and can easily be mounted to a display stand or other structure by folding the sign inwardly of itself at the two points and engaging the so-defined through passages over respective portions of the stand or other structure.
Preferably the sign is arranged to fold inwardly of itself along four respective transverse lines which are spaced apart longitudinally of the substrate, so that the sign can extend around four sides of the stand or other structure.
Preferably all four transverse lines are provided with respective regions which fold outwardly to define through-passages when said sign is folded inwardly Preferably the sign is printed on its outer surface.
Preferably means, such as tabs, are provided for joining the substrate end-to-end.
Preferably each said region is respectively defined between two parallel cuts, which extend generally longitudinally of the substrate.
Preferably each said region is cut to define a tab, which can be folded into the through passage to engage a formation on the support structure extending therethrough Preferably the sign is formed as a one-piece formation of paper or plastics sheet material.
Also in accordance with the present invention, there is provided a stand or other structure comprising a sign as hereinbefore defined, the through passages of the sign being engaged over respective portions of the stand or other structure.
Preferably the stand or other structure comprises tour uprights, the sign extending around said four uprights and comprising through-passages which respectively engage over at least two of said uprights.
An embodiment of the present invention will now be described by way of an example only and with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a portion of a sign in accordance with the present invention, when mounted to a display stand; Figure 2 is a perspective view of the rear of one corner of the sign of Figure 1; Figure 3 is a sectional view through one corner of the sign of Figure 1, when engaged over an upright of the stand; and Figure 4 is a front view of a portion of a substrate for forming into the sign of Figure 1.
Referring to the drawings, there is shown a display sign 10 fitted to the uprights 20 of a display stand. The sign 10 comprises an elongate substrate 11 of a resiliently flexible sheet material, such as plastics.
The substrate 10 is formed with four longitudinally-spaced and pre-scored transverse lines of weakness 12, which are positioned to allow the sign 10 to be wrapped closely around all four sides of the display stand and joined end-to-end by a fastening (not shown). The outer face of the sign 10 is printed with the text and/or images to be displayed.
The substrate 11 is cut along pairs of parallel lines 13, which extend longitudinally of the substrate through respective ones of the four transverse lines of weakness 12.
Opposite ends of the pairs of cut lines 13 are interconnected by pre-scored lines of weakness 16, which extend transverse the substrate 10. A fold-out region 14 is defined between the respective lines 13 of each pair, each region 14 being arranged such that when the substrate 11 is folded inwardly about the transverse lines of weakness 12, the regions 14 fold outwardly to define through-passages 15 which extend transversely of the rear surface of the sign 10.
The fold-out regions 14 are cut to define respective tabs 17, which can be folded inwardly into their through-passage 15. The distal end of the tab 17 is provided with laterally-extending projections 18.
In use, the sign 10 is slid onto the upper end of the uprights 20 of the display stand, such that the uprights 20 extend through respective ones of the through-passages 15. The tabs 17 are then pushed inwardly to engage into one of a series of slots 21 formed longitudinally of each upright 20. The distance between the projections 18 on the outer ends of the tabs 17 is wider than the length of the slots 21, so that the tabs 17 are securely retained in the slots 21. Accordingly, the tabs 17 thus serve to hold the sign 1 0 in a selected vertical position on the stand.
It will be appreciated that the sign 10 as illustrated has four sides and surrounds the stand. However, it will be appreciated that the sign could have only one, two or three sides.
A sign in accordance with the present invention is simple and inexpensive in construction, yet provides a neat and strong way of displaying text and/or images.
Moreover, the sign is formed as a one-piece and can be simply printed in the conventional manner when its unfolded form.
