Abstract
244,082. Ravella, J. Dec. 5, 1924, [Convention date]. Branding by heat.-An electrically heated branding-iron comprises a hollow base b adapted to contain the heating element and provided with channels n, n<1> which receive conductors m, m<1> and open into recesses k<1> wherein are housed laminated contact plates k. The heating element j comprises a central mica strip round which a resistance r is wound, it being enclosed between other mica strips and soldered to the shorter limbs of the L-shaped contact plates k which are constructed from strip metal and heat in the manner shown in Fig. 5. Connection between the contact plates k and the conductors m, m<1> is effected by inserting plates k<2>, soldered thereto, into the recesses k<1>, and forcing these and the longer limbs of the plates k into contact by screws l, insulating plates s, s<1> being placed on either side of the plates k, k<2>. Forced into a sleeve o of the base b is a perforated tube c carrying a hollow wooden &c. handle d through which the conductors m, m<1> pass, these being secured to contact plates f<3> fixed to the top of the handle. Also secured to the plates f<3> are the ends of the lead e which pass through a cap h screwed on to the handle.. In addition to the ordinary insulation, the conductors m, m<1> are surrounded by poreclain beads. The branding-plate a is secured to the base b by countersunk screws.
