Abstract

A tile or slab which can be laid in an array with abutting edges, wherein an upper, or outer surface of the tile or slab in use is recessed a around its periphery to provide a gap between the tiles or slabs at the upper surface for receiving grout. This forms a self spacing tile or slab with an extended base.

Description

EXTENDED BASE SLAB TILE

This invention relates to a PATIO SLAB I TILE of the type which has an extended base all the way round to facilitate laying in straight lines.

Slab Tiles are commonly used to cover the patio floor area. They are sometimes very difficult to lay without prior knowledge in this area. If the tiles are not laid in a proper manner this can make the appearance of floors very ugly, and most of the times excessive grouting/cement pointing is used to cover poor workmanship.

The object behind this invention is to facilitate the easy laying of the patio slab for people with no experience in this field, therefore saving on vasts amounts of money covering labour costs due to time consumption.

This invention allows the slab to be: a) Laid on the patio floor in straight lines without having to measure the gaps for cement grouting, once the slabs have been laid on the floor there is an automatic gap between each tile where the cement grouting can be inserted neatly and without mess. This invention also helps eliminate weed growth from underneath as the slabs meet and there is then another layer of cement grout which is used to neatly fill the gaps.

The simple drawings will now be described.

FIGURE 1 shows the invention as it would look from above, the inner square relates to the slab as you would see it and the outer sleeve (a) represents the extended base which you would place next to the second slab for accuracy. See FIGURE 3.

FIGURE 2 shows the invention from a corner angle clearly showing the extended base (a) this angle shows the extended base (a) from both sides and even clearly shows the where the cement or grouting would go (a).

FIGURE 3 shows the invention from a side angle after being cut in the middle, this angle clearly shows the extended base, this angle not only shows the method to produce a straight line but also shows the area where the slabs would meet and be grouted/cement pointed.

FIGURE 3 shows how 2 slabs would meet upon being laid. The grouting would be placed in the middle of the four or on (a) if more were to be laid.

In summary the extended base slabs/tiles can be laid with little or no knowledge of this trade, saving the buyer on expensive labour costs. The design is such, that once laid they will always be in a straight line, still allowing for those gaps for grouting.

This invention will also help considerably in reducing, if not eliminating weed growth from underneath.

This invention is also sufficient in design to meet similar requirements for normal ceramic wall and floor tiles. 2.
