Description

A CEMENT MIXER AND RECEPTACLE THEREFOR
The present invention relates to a cement mixer and a receptacle therefor.
Cement mixers are used regularly in the building trade and typically comprise a base on which a cement mixing drum is rotatably mounted, and motor means to rotate the cement mixing drum and so mix the cement mixture in the drum.
After use it is desirable to clean the interior of the cement mixing drum so that any cement mixture remaining in the drum is removed prior to the cement mixture setting. This cleaning process typically involves adding rubble to the drum to dislodge the cement mixture from the interior of the drum and then pouring the cement/rubble mixture into a wheelbarrow, or sometimes, down the drain. During the cleaning process some of the cement/rubble mixture can spill from the drum and set on the property where the cement mixer is being used. It can be difficult to subsequently remove such spillages after they have set.
According to a first aspect of the invention there is provided a cement mixer comprising a base supporting a rotatable cement mixing drum comprising an open mouth through which cement can be poured, the cement mixer further comprising a receptacle and receptacle attachment means to attach the receptacle to the mouth of the cement mixing drum such that, in use, during cleaning of the interior of the cement mixing drum, material that spills from the cement mixing drum is retained in the receptacle.
Preferably the receptacle comprises a bag, the mouth of which is dimensioned to receive the mouth of the cement mixing drum.
Preferably the mouth of the bag is provided with a reinforced portion which receives, in use, the mouth of the cement mixing drum.
Alternatively the receptacle comprises an at least partially rigid container the mouth of which is dimensioned to receive the mouth of the cement mixing drum.
Preferably the attachment means effects a liquid seal between the receptacle and the mouth of the cement mixing drum.
In one embodiment the attachment means is a separate component to the receptacle and to the cement mixer.
In another embodiment the attachment means is integral with at least one of the receptacle and the cement mixing drum.
The attachment means preferably comprises an elongate member that extends, in use around the periphery of the mouth of the cement mixing drum.
Preferably the elongate member comprises adjustment means to enable the elongate member to be tightened around the mouth of the cement mixing drum.
Preferably the adjustment means comprises a friction type buckle.
Alternatively the adjustment means comprises a ratchet mechanism.
Preferably the elongate member is elasticated.
In another embodiment the attachment means comprises a clip or clips on the mixing drum adapted to clip onto the mouth of the receptacle.
Preferably the clip or clips is/are quick release type clips.
Preferably the clip or clips on the cement mixing drum, in use, clip onto a clip or clips provided on the mouth of the receptacle.
In a further embodiment the attachment means comprises a groove extending around the outside of the mouth of the cement mixing drum, the material around the mouth of the receptacle, in use, being received and retained in the groove.
Preferably the groove is provided with at least one resilient flap that closes the groove, but partially opens as the mouth of the receptacle is received in the groove, the flap then engaging the material around the mouth of the receptacle.
According to a second aspect of the invention there is provided a receptacle for a cement mixer of a type comprising a base supporting a rotatable cement mixing drum comprising an open mouth through which cement can be poured, the receptacle comprising attachment means to attach the receptacle to the mouth of the cement mixing drum such that, in use during cleaning of the interior of the cement mixing drum, material that spills from the cement mixing drum is retained in the receptacle.
Preferably the receptacle comprises a bag, the mouth of which is dimensioned to receive, in use, the mouth of the cement mixing drum.
Preferably the mouth of the bag is provided with a reinforced portion which receives, in use, the mouth of the cement mixing drum.
Alternatively the receptacle comprises an at least partially rigid container the mouth of which is dimensioned to receive, in use, the mouth of the cement mixing drum.
Preferably the attachment means effects a liquid seal, in use, between the receptacle and the mouth of the cement mixing drum.
In one embodiment the attachment means comprises an elongate member that extends, in use, around the periphery of the mouth of the cement mixing drum.
Preferably the elongate member comprises adjustment means to enable the elongate member to be tightened around the mouth of the cement mixer.
Preferably the adjustment means comprises a friction type buckle.
Alternatively the adjustment means comprises a ratchet mechanism.
Preferably the elongate member is elasticated.
Preferably the clip or clips is/are quick release type clips.
Preferably the attachment means comprises a clip or clips provided on the mouth of the receptacle, adapted to engage, in use, with the cement mixing drum.
Other aspects of the present invention may include any combination of the features or limitations referred to herein.
The present invention may be carried into practice in various ways, but embodiments will now be described by way of example only with reference to the accompanying drawing which is a perspective view of a cement mixer and receptacle in accordance with the present invention.
Referring to the Figure, a cement mixer 1 comprises a base 3 comprising four equispaced legs 5 extending down from a tubular support 7 on top of which is removably mounted a mixer frame 9. The mixer frame 9 supports a cement mixer drum 11 which is rotated in use relative to the frame 9 by motor means (not shown) which may comprise an electric motor or an internal combustion engine as is well known.
The mixer frame 9 additionally comprises a pair of transversely spaced apart wheels 13, and a pair of transversely spaced apart handles 15 to enable the frame 9 and drum 11 to be removed from the stand 3 and moved to another location.
The drum 11 of the cement mixer I comprises a circular mouth 17 into which the cement ingredients are poured, and out of which the mixed cement product is poured. A suitable hinge mechanism between the drum 11 and the frame 9 may be provided to facilitate the pouring of the mixed cement product.
A cement waste receptacle is provided comprising a bag 19, the mouth 21 of which is dimensioned to receive the mouth 17 of the mixer drum 11.
Attachment means are provided to secure the bag material adjacent the bag mouth 21 to the part of the cement mixer drum 11 adjacent the mixer mouth 17.
The attachment means thus sealingly secures the bag 19 to the periphery of the mouth 17 of the cement mixer 1 such that spillage of cement from the drum 11 is collected in the bag 19, whether during cleaning of the cement mixer 1 or otherwise.
The attachment means can be provided as a separate item, or as an integral part of the bag 19 or of the cement mixer 1 itself. The attachment means could comprise an elongate member such as a strap 23 that extends, in use, around the periphery of the cement mixer mouth 17, the strap 23 comprising adjustment means to enable the strap 23 to be tightened around the mouth 17 of the cement mixer 1. The adjustment means could comprise a friction buckle or ratchet, or the strap 23 could be elasticated.
The attachment means could alternatively, or additionally, comprise a set of clips on the mixer drum 11 adapted to mate with a set of clips spaced around the mouth of the receptacle. Such clips could comprise quick release type clips such as, for example, snap fit type.
The attachment means could alternatively comprise a groove extending around the outside of the mouth 17 of the drum 11, the material around the mouth 21 of the bag 19 being received and retained in the groove using suitable retaining means which could comprise a resilient flap or flaps that ordinarily close the groove, but deform so as to partially open as the mouth 21 of the bag 19 is received in the groove. The flap or flaps engage the material around the mouth of the bag 19 to retain the bag 19.
The receptacle could comprise any suitably sized receptacle whether made from a flexible, semi flexible, or rigid material and could include, for example, a plastics or fibrous bag or sack, a plastics or metal rigid or partially rigid container (optionally provided with a carrying handle), or an annular bib adapted to fit around the mouth 17 of the drum 11. Any other suitable receptacle could alternatively be provided.
The receptacle may comprise closure means to close the receptacle for transportation to a disposal site, after being filled with cement spillage from the mixer.
