Abstract

243,005. Rossman, A. R. Nov. 13, 1924, [Convention date]. Carriages, sleeping; steps.-In a convertible day and sleeping car, the seats and seat-backs 16, Fig. 5, are arranged in, the ordinary way to form a lower berth 18, Fig. 3, above which is disposed a pivoted upper berth 19, each set of two berths having associated therewith a dressing compartment 20 from which direct access to the lower berth is obtained through a door-way 24, Fig. 2, normally closed by a folding door 25. A partition 29 provides in the upper portion of the compartment 20 a smaller compartment 28, to which access is gained from the berth 19 through a door 32, Fig. 3, and which serves for storing luggage, clothing, &c. Additional doors give access to the compartments 20, 28 direct from the central aisle. In its operative position, the upper berth 19 is supported at its two inner ends on the upper ends of two hollow posts 35, Fig. 6, and secured by means of sliding catches 46. The posts 35 serve for the reception of spring rollers 36 on which are mounted sections 37 of a flexible curtain adapted to enclose the lower berth, the outer ends of the curtains being secured to bars 38 which are guided at their lower ends in grooves 40 in the floor and at their upper ends in grooves 39 on the under side of the berth 19. The side of the berth 19 is furnished with a pivoted guardrail 47, Figs. 2 and 3, which has an extension 48 for supporting a curtain 49 and is maintained in its erected position by stays 51, but can be folded on to the top of the berth 19 before the latter is swung to its out-of-use position. In order to gain access to the upper berth, the guard-rail 47 is provided with a gate 52, the opening of which causes the unfolding of a collapsable ladder disposed in the central aisle and having straps 59 engaging the edge of the berth 19. The ladder, Figs. 2 and 7, comprises two similar sections 54, 55, connected by steps 56 hinged to each section, and a vertical depending arm 53 carried by the gate 52 is adapted to press upon the top step to cause the unfolding of the ladder. When folded and removed the ladder can be disposed on the top of the berth 19.
