Disposed in the fixed partition as opposite the folding partition. a door 2| provides access to an adjoining private toilet and bath 82. V
The bathroom 32 contains all of the ,toilet facilities for the room-including a medicine cabinet 23, a washstand 24, a hopper 25 and a shower tub 25. The medicine cabinet; is provided with a hinged door 21, having a. mirror 28, and isadapted for the accommodation of toilet articles. An
exterior shelf 39 may be used for the accommothe master room, taken on the line 9-9 of Fig. 3,
dation. of toilet articles while the mirror 28 is I being used. The washstand 24 p is disposed beneath the medicine cabinet and is provided with hot and cold water faucets 38 connected with con.- cealed supply pipes (not shown) and with a drain (not shown) emptying beneath the car. The; hopper 25 is provided with a hinged-seat 35 and a cover 36 and, as best shown in Figs. 1 and 3,
is disposed in a comer of the bathroom adjacent the side wall of the car and out of the .way of the Washstand and medicine cabinet. A window as is provided in the bathroom to admit light and is. disposed in the side wall it. The shower tub 25 is disposed upon the opposite side of the bathroom entrance door 2! from. the toilet and washstand and isprovided with a shower curtain 33 supported from red 3Aaffording an enclosable stall-and is equipped with a shower head 37 having controls 39 for regulating the'ilow of water therethrough. A, drain 3| is provided in the shower tub to empty waste water beneath the car. i A
In the master room, between the doors I9 and 2I and disposed adjacent the aisle partition I- and partition I4 in the corner formed thereby, is a'dual wardrobe 45 for the convenience of the occupants of the room. Dividing-partition 46 separates the wardrobe'into individual compartments accessible through twin doors H. A baggage shelf 40 is disposed at the top of the wardrobes and extends the length of the aisle partition I5 and along the bathroom partition I4 above the door 2I. 0n the opposite side of the bathroom door 2I'from the wardrobe 45, the
partition I4 is constructed of greater depth, as
at II I, in order to accommodate a folding bed II2 hingedly mounted therein, at 3, and foldable endwise flush therewithin, as best shown in Figs. 1, 3 and 9. The hinge point H3 is dis posed adjacent to the lower end of the bed in the vertical, closed position; and the bed is movable thereabout from the fully closed position indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 4 to the full-open, horizontal position indicated in full lines in this same figure, during which movement the bed is balanced for easy handling by coil springs H4 1 arranged in batteries of three at each side of the under the influence of springs I I4 combined with starting or stopping movements of the car. The member I45 is provided'with a supporting mem- 'ber I46 plvotally mounted'therein and normally flush with the surface thereof in the closed position, but which is movable to .an extended, hori- I45 at opposite sides of its pivot point and is held in its respectively 'opposite extended and closed positions by a coil spring mounted' to exert a thrust beyond dead center with respect to the pivot point in each of the two such extreme positions. The support I46 is channel-shaped in cross-section and, in the closed position, is
junction therewith. The support and holding bed, as shown in Fig. 9, and anchored to angle members H5 and I I5 rigidly secured to the lower end of the bed and the car floor, respectively. The bed H2 is received in recess I H in the closed position and releasably secured by spring-actuated catches H8 mounted in the respective side walls of the recess and engageable with complemental combination lock member castings H9.
secured in respectively opposing side walls of the bed. The latches II8 each-engage the respective castings to hold the bed closed and are released, when it is desired to lower the bed, by means of push rods I2 I which engage the latches and depressthem from engagement with the function in the open position of the bed as hereinafter described. 1 V
In the open position, the bed, at its edge away from the wall, I6, is supportedfrom the floor by. means of a combination bed leg and mattress holder I21 hingedly mounted on the side wall of the bed at the top edge thereof, as at I 28, and adapted to swing, through an arc of 270 or more, from a position clamping the mattress in the vertical, closed position of the bed, to a position supporting the bed in its horizontal, open position. ,The bed leg is provided with a catch I29 engageable with the casting II9 to hold the leg vertical and closely adjacent to the 'side of the bed in supportingposition and to preventthe foot of the leg from being displaced outwardly. When it is desired to close the bed, the leg I21 maybe swung to lie across the mattress I33 where it is adapted to be secured to V i hold the mattress in place as the bed is raised to its vertical, closed position.-
At its edge adjacent to wall I6, the bed is supported in its open, horizontalposition by means of combined bed support and holder I45 which also prevents the bed .irom accidentally closing adapted, through the force exerted beyond dead center in this position, to confine a spring-actuated bed hold-down device I55 operating in condevice both are disposed flush with the surface of member I45 and are adapted, both, to move outwardly into operative positions when the support member is moved to a position where its spring exerts pressure beyond dead center out- -wardly-'-thus urging such member to full open,
80 supporting position and releasing the hold-down device to move to bed-holding position under influence of its own spring. The bed-holding device I55 is pivotally mounted in'the member I45, and the actuating spring therefor operates in torsion about the pivot point. Stops are provided for limiting outward movement of the holding device. 7
In the open position, the bed-holding-device is adapted to project into the path of movement of 40 the bed I I2, whereby, as the bed is-lowered onto castings and hold them depressed until the bed is the support I46, it will automatically engage the casting II9 on the wall-adjacent side of the bed.
It will readily be seen that the device I55 acts as from closing or being closed without first releasing the holding device. When it is desired to close the bed H2, the catch I29 is released and the leg I 21 secured across the mattress I33 and 'the'holding device then released, whereupon the bed may be raised to its vertical position within recess I I1 and secured by catches I I8, after which the holding device I55 is pressed into the member I45 and the support I 46 closed thereabout to hold it in place and provide a flush surface. A safety device is provided in the closed position of the bed to prevent the bed from falling accidentally in the event that the concealed catches II8 are not fully and positively engaged. .An automatically operating, spring-actuated catch I65.is disposed above and in position to be engaged by the bed as V it is closed and provides a safety device, fully exposedto view, which must be operated by aporter' with a stick having a hook on the end, provided for the purpose, before the bed can be released.
As best shown in Fig. 2, the master room is provided with beds at right angles to each other and both of which are foldable endwise into re cesses in respectively adjacent, angularly disposed walls thereof and, as shown, are arranged in diagonally opposite corners of theroo'ms. The bed above described is foldable into the partition I4 adjacent to the side wall I6 of the car and is openable to a longitudinally disposed position along the side wall beneath the windows 14, but
does. not extend the full length of the room. At
the diagonally opposite'corner or the room from the bed first described, the aisle partition i is constructed of. greater depth, as at Hit, in order to accommodate a folding bed H2 hingedly mounted therein at 3 and foldable endwise flush therewithin, as best shown in Figs. 1,3 and 5.
