The foregoing and other objects are attained by the arrangement illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which- Fig. 1 is a general perspective view of the porter's section ready for daytime use showing the seat and having the berth disposed out of the way in its closed position;

In Pullman sleeping cars it has been customary to provide the services of a porter for each car or a porter oncall between two adjoining cars to look after the wants of the passengers and to perform various duties essential to the eflicient operation of the cars and to the convenience or the passengers. It is, of course, necessary for the porter to have facilities forsleeping at night when his duties have all been performed and in open section cars it has always been possible to provide sleeping pace in the relatively large mens general wash room which is incorporated in all cars of this type, but in cars. the plan of since these facilities are provided in each room, it
becomes dimcult at times to provide such sleeping facilities for the porter. Heretofore it has been the practice of the porter to make use of Fig. '4 is a longitudinal sectional view through the porters section taken on the line 4-401 Fig.

Ordinarily, in ullman cars the space now occuby lockers andthe-.like, but such lockers have been rearranged to provide all of'the facilities heretofore to be had and at the same time made to aflord room for the inclusion of a sleeping berth adapted to be folded out of the way when not in use. In the corner of the end space of the car formed by the sidewall i2 and the endwall it, an electric locker 25 is disposed which is formed by an aisle wallj'l and a transverse Wall interior of the locker 25 is designed to accommodate various items of electrical equip'ment, only a few of which, and 52, are illustrated, asbest shown in Fig. 4 and is accessible from the porter's section space by means of pairs of upper and lower hinged doors and 55, respectively, which also are kept locked at all times and may be pied by this porter's section has been taken up a cooling coil (not shown) located in an ice chest 41 which is disposed in the porter's section im- 7 mediately in back of the seat and extending between the side wall i2 and the cabinet 51. The
ice chest is heavily insulated as best shown in Fig. 4 and is filled through an insulated door 45 located in the top of the chest and hingedly mounted: The carafes 45 when not in use in the various passenger rooms are stored in special trays 49 designed for the purpose and located in storage locker 50 adjoining the ice chest and cabinet 4i whereby they may readily and conveniently be filled by the porter for distribution to the rooms. The storage locker 50 is closed by a hinged door 5! opening into the aisle alongside of cabinet door 45. Immediately above the locker door 5| an open faced receptacle 52 is provided which is adapted to contain telegraph message blanks and the like for the convenience of passengers.
It will be noted that all of the facilities thus far described are associated directly with the porter's space and located conveniently to his use with certain of them in the aisle also available to the passengers and including emergency tools (not shown) which are located .in a container 53 disposed on the aisle wall opposite the porters section (see Fig. 7). In the porter's section the seat 38 is available at all times but in order to permit a fully reclining position for sleeping, a folding berth is provided which may be extended for use aboveithe seat but leaving the seat avail-' able for use. Theberth and bedding therefor are accommodated in the space above the storage locker 50 and between the side wall i2 and the aisle. The berth storage space is disposed immediately above the plane of both the storage opened only by the porter with his key. As best i shown in Fig. 6 certain control switches 55 are disposed in a group on the exterior of the locker wall 25 in the porter's space for operation by free edge of the berth when the berth is in its,
extended position.
Opposite the electric locker and facing the wall- 25 is the porters seat 55 disposed between the sidewall i2 and aseatend 55 at the aisle. It
will 'be noted that the seat end 55. is of substantial depth to accommodate utility storage lockers disposed on the aisle side of the seat end in its lower portion and access may be had thereto by means of hingedly mounted doors 45. Above the storage lockers in the upper portion ofthe thickened seat end a cabinet 5| is provided to enclose a water filter 52 and a goose-neck faucet 55 having valve 55 used in filling carafes 55 with filtered water for each of the. individual rooms of the car. The filling mechanism is concealed by means of hinged door 55 which provides access to the cabinet from the aisle. The water piping for the filter and filling nest is connected him. An indicating light 55 is also disposed on locker and the top surface of the ice chest 41. The berth is comprised of a fixed section overlying the locker 50 and folding panels 55 and 56- which are hinged together approximately midway of their total length as at 51 by means of continuous hinges and adapted to be extended from the closed positionindicated in Fig. 1 to the operative position for use indicated in Fig. 2. The berth panel- 55 is hingedly mounted with respect to the fixed portion 54 as at 55 and at its opposite margin is adapted to engage abutment 55 in the folded closed position as best shown in Fig. 4. The folding sections of the berth are shown in full lines in this figure in their folded fully closed position and shown in broken lines in two positions to indicate the operation thereof to fully extended mattres'ssupporting position. It will be seen that the panel 55 is hingedly mounted to the panel 55 at that edge of the latter which swings on an arc about the hinge point 55 so that the hinge connection 51 between the two panels is disposed at the abutment 55 when the berth is closed up and the free edge of panel 55 is directed downwardly and adjacent to the fixed hinge edge 55 of panel 55. The surface of panel 55 is arranged flush with the surface 50 in the closed position of the berth and similar devices 5| are disposed at opposite sides of the panel 55 for locking both berth panels in fully closed position. The devices 5| comprise a. catch 52 and a pivoted locking: member 55 adapted to engage the catch. At that'side of the berth adjacent the side wall I! the catch 52 is located in the side of the recess receiving the berth and 'the locking member 55 is located upon the face of the panel 55 as best shown in Figures 2 and '5 but at the opposite side of the berth a wedge with? Upon release of the locking members 63 the folded berth is adapted to be extended from the closed position indicated in Fig. 4 to the fully open position shown in Fig. 3 at which time the tree edge of the berth is supported upon the ledge 31 located on the surface of the electric locker 26 between the upper and lower doors. 3! and 30. The free edge of panel 55 is'thus supported by means of this ledge and the panel 56 is supported at its hinged edge 58 and by the ice chest 41 but additional support adjacent the intermediate hinge 51.v A pivotally mounted supporting strut 65 is disposed at the outside edgeof the berth panels adjacent the aisle and as best shown in'the fragmentary detail view illustrated in Fig. 8 is pivotally secured at be to the inside surface of the seat end 39. A limiting stop 61 confines the pivotal movement of the strut to the one hundred eighty degrees (180) necessary to the swinging of the strut from the upright supporting position indicated in this shown in Fig. 4.. The berth supporting strut is provided with a flange portion 68 at its extremity which in the upright position of the strut is adapted to be entered into a recess 69 provided therefor in the under surface of securely to be maintained in supporting relation to the berth by reason of such interlocking association insured by the weight of the berth upon the strut. It will be noted that while the strut is engaged with the berth structure beneath panel 53 its engagement therewith is disposed immediately adjacent to the hinge 51 whereby to provide support for both of the berth panels through the the side wall position the berth is similarly supported intermediate its ends by means of a ledge secured to the side wall It in position to be engaged'by the panel 56 when the berth is extended for use wherefore it will be seen that the berth when in its open position is supported for more than half its length at both sides and the greatest span between supports comprises .the panel 55 from the Thus it will be seen that the extended berth panels provide a rigid supporting surface for it which is adapted to be afford a comfortable sleeping accommodation for the porter. From the foregoing it will be seen that an auxiliary berth section arrangement has been provided for railway sleeping cars having individual room accommodations exclusively wherein complete facilities for the porter are provided and which are located convenient to all appurtenances requiring the porters attention and which are realized without encroaching upon otherwise normally usable spacein the car but is had by combining existing facilities with the present arrangement insuch manner as to aflford .figure to the depending inoperative position panel 58 thereby improved accommodations for the porter and better planning of the existent facilities and of a generally acceptable nature.
What is claimed is:
1'. In a railway sleeping car having a side wall and an aisle, an auxiliary sleeping berth section disposed between the side wall and the aisle and comprising a section space, a transversely dis-- posed fixed seat in said space, a seat end construction atthe aisle, utility lockers in the seat end accessible from the aisle, locker space adjoiningthe back of said seat between the side wall and seat end of greater height than the seat and accessible from the section space, a storage locker adjoining said locker space and accessible from the aisle, a compartment abovesaid storage locker, a locker spaced from said seat defining the opposite end wall of. said section space, upper and lower portions of said last-named locker accessible respectively from the section space and a portion accessible from the aisle, a'foldable berth for the section space having a fixed portion overlying said storage locker and forming the bottom of said compartment,. a pair of berth b panels comprising a first. panel hingedly conthe cushioned mattress stretched thereon to closure of the berth nected at one end with said fixed portion and a second panel hingedly connected at one end to the opposite end of the'first panel whereby to, provide a full length berth foldable intermediate .its ends and adapted to be extended from a folded vertical closed position to a horizontal open position on a plane with said fixed portion abovesaid seat, the folded berthdn its closed position being adapted to provide a closure for said compartment, locking means for holding the berth panels closed, said first panel in the extended position of the berth being adapted to be supported intermediate its ends upon said locker space whereby to provide, headroom above said seat, means on the opposite end wall of the section-space'between said upper and lower portions for supporting the. free end of said second panel, means for supporting the intermediate folding connection between said panels comprising a ledge on the side wall extending beneath the berth adjacent said connection and a strut memand bedding for the berth adapted to ,be stored in said compartment when the berth is closed,
a removable curtain arrangement for the berth including a supporting member having tensioning means incorporated therewith and adapted to be stretched between said compartment and the opposite end wall, and step means on the seat end construction aflordlng access to the berth.
2. In a railway sleeping car havin a side wall and an aisle, an auxiliary sleeping berth section disposed between the side wall and the aisle and comprising a section space, a transversely disposed fixed seat in said space, a seat end construction at the aisle, locker space adjoining the back of said seat between the side wall and seat end of greater height than the seat, a storage locker adjoining said locker space, a compartment above said storage locker, a locker spaced from said seat defining the opposite end wall of said section space, a foldable berth for the section space having a fixed portion overlying said storage locker and forming the bottom of said compartment, a pair of berth panels comprising a' first panel hing'edlyconnected at one end with said fixed portion and a second panel hingedly connected at one end to the opposite end of the first panel whereby to provide a full length berth foldable intermediate its ends and adapted to be extended from a folded vertical closed position to a horizontal open position on a plane with said fixed portion above said seat, the folded berth in its closed position being adapted to provide a closure for said compartment, locking means for holding the berth panels closed, said first panel in the extended position of the berth being adapted to be supported intermediate its ends upon said locker space whereby to provide headroom above said seat, means on the opposite end wall of the section space for supporting the free end of said second panel, means for supporting the intermediate folding connection between said panels closed,

3. In a railway sleepingcar having a side wall and an aisle, an auxiliary sleeping berth section disposed between the side wall and the aisle and comprising a section space, a transversely disposed fixed seat in said space, a seat end construction at the aisle, a storage locker of greater height than the seat and located in back thereof, a compartment above said storage locker, an end wall defining the opposite end of said section space a foldable berth for the section space having a fixed portion overlying said storage locker and forming the bottom of said compartment, a pair of berth panels comprising a first panel hingedly connected at one end with said fixed portion and a second panel hingedly connected at one end to the opposite end of the first panel whereby to provide a full length berth foldable intermediate its ends and adapted to be extended from a folded vertical closed position to a horizontal open position onia plane with said fixed portion above said seat and providing headroom therefor, the folded berth in its closed position being adapted to provide a closure for said coma berth for the section partment, locking means for holding the berth means on the opposite end wall of the section space for supporting the tree end of said second panel, means for supporting the intermediate folding connection between said panels comprising a ledge on the side wall extending beneath the berth adjacent said connection and a strut member pivotally mounted on the seat end adapted to swing from an upright berth supporting position to a depending inoperative position, a mattress and bedding for the berth adapted to be stored in said compartment when the berth is closed, a removable curtain arrangement for the berth including a supporting member having tensioning means incorporated therewith and adapted to be stretched between said compartment and the opposite end wall, and step means on the seat end construction aifording access to the berth.
4. In a railway sleeping car having a side wall and an aisle, an auxiliary sleeping berth section disposed between the side wall and the aisle and comprising a section space, a transversely disposed fixed seat in said space, a seat end construction at the aisle, a storage locker of greater height than the seat and located in back thereof, a compartment above saidstorage locker, an end wall defining the opposite end of said section space, a foldable berth for the section space having a fixed portion overlying said storage locker and forming the bottomof said compartment, a pair of berth panels comprising a first panel hingedly connected at one endwith said fixed portion and a second panel hingedly connected at one end to the opposite end of the first panel whereby to provide a full length berth foldable, intermediate its end and adapted to be extended from a folded vertical closed position to a horizontal open position on a plane with said-fixed portion above said seat and providing headroom therefor, the folded berth in its closed position being adapted to provide a closure for said compartment, means on the opposite end wall of the section space for supporting the free end of said second panel, means for supporting the intermediate folding connection between said panels comprising a strut member pivotally mounted on theseat end adapted to swing from an upright berth supporting position to a depending inoperative position, a mattress and bedding for the berth adapted to be stored in said compartment when the berth is closed, a removable curtain arrangement for the berth including a supporting member having tensioning means. incorporated therewith and adapted to be stretched between said compartment and the opposite end wall, and step means on the seat end construction affording access to the berth.
5. In a railway sleeping car having a side wall and an aisle, an auxiliary sleeping berth section disposed between the side wall and the aisle and comprising a section space; a transversely disposed fixed seat in said space, a seat-end construction at the aisle, a compartment located in back of and above said seat. an end wall defining the opposite end of said section space, a foldable space having a fixed portion forming the bottom of said compartment, a pair of berth panels comprising a first panel hingedly connected at one end with said fixed portion and a second panel hing'edly connected at one end to the opposite end of the first panel whereby to-provide a full length berth foldable intermediate its ends and adapted to be extended from a folded vertical closed position to a horicomprising a strut member pivotally mounted on the seat end adapted to swing froman upright berth supporting position to a depending inoperative position, a mattress and bedding for the berth adapted to be stored in said compartment when the berth is closed, a removable curtain arrangement for the berth adapted to be stretched between said compartment and the opposite end wall, and step means on the seat end construe.-

disposed between the side wall and the aisle and comprising a section space, a transversely disposed fixed seat in said space, a compartment located in back of and above said seat, an end wall defining the opposite end of said section space, a foldable berth for the section space having a fixed portion forming the bottom of said compartment, a pair of berthpanels comprising a first panel hingedly connected at one end with said fixed portion and a second panel hingedly connected at one end to the opposite end of the first panel whereby to provide a full lengthberth foldable intermediate its ends and adapted to be extended-from a folded vertical closed position to a horizontal open position on a plane with said fixed portion above said seat and providing headroom therefor, the folded berth in its closed posifixed portion above and to wall defining the opposite end of said section space, a foldable berth ing a fixed portion forming the bottom of said compartment, a pair of berth panels comprising a first panel hlngcdlv connected at one end with said fixed portion and a second panel hingedly connected at one end to the opposite end 01' the first panel whereby to provide a full length berth foldable intermediate its end and adapted to be extended from a folded vertical closed position to a horizontal open position on a plane with said fixed portion above said seat an providing'headroom therefor, the folded berth in its closed position being sure for said compartment, and means on the opposite end wall of the section space for supporting the free end of. said second panel.

In a railway sleeping car having a side wall and anaisle, an auxiliary sleeping berth section disposed between theside wall and the aisle and comprising a section space, a transversely disposed fixed seat in said space, a foldable berthifor the section space comprisinga the rear of said seat including a first panel end to said fixed porand a pair of berth panels hlngedly connected at one tion and a second panel hingedly connected at one end to the opposite end or the first panel whereby to provide a full length berth foldable intermediate its ends and adapted to be extended from a folded vertical closed position to a horition being adapted to provide a closure for said compartment, means on the opposite end wall of the section space for supporting the free end of said second panel, means for supporting themtermediate folding connection between said panto zontal open position on a plane above said seat and providing in open position sufiicient headroom to permit the seat to be occupied and means for supporting the free-end of said second panel.

In a railway sleeping car having a side wall and an aisle; a section space in the car defor the section space havadapted to provide a 010- fined by end walls extending transversely from the side wall to the aisle. said section space having a lower seating area and a sleeping area spaced above the seatlngarea, an auxiliary sleeping berth in said sleeping area comprising a fixed portion adjacent one of said end walls and a pair of folding panels including a first panel hingedly connected to said fixed portion and a second panel first panel whereby. to provide a full length berth foldable intermediate its ends and adapted to be extended from folded closedposition to open positionextending substantially the full length between said end walls, means for supporting the intermediate hingedly connected portion of said panels, and means for supporting the free end of said second panel, the plane of said fixed portion and of thev panels when extended to open position being sufiiciently high in the section space to permit the seating of an occupant in the seating area when the berth is extended to open position.

In a railway sleeping car having a section space, end walls defining the length of said space, said section space having a lower seating area and a sleeping area spaced above the seatingarea, a folding berth for the sleeping area including a horizontal fixed portion at one end of the section space, a panel member hingedly connected with said horizontal portion and at least one other panel member hingedly connected with saidimember to provide a berth extendible from a. vertical iolded position adjacent said end of the section space to an open position on a horizontal plane coincident with said fixed portion at said upper level, and means for supporting said panels in extended position, said horizontal plane being sufllciently high in the section space to permit the seating of an occupant in the seating area when the panel members are extended to open position.

14. In a railway sleeping car having a section space including a lower area for use during the day and an upper area for use at night,
a compartment in the section space located insaid upper area, a berth for the section space associated with said compartment including a panel member hingedly connected-with the compartment, and a second panel member hingedly connected to said member, said panel members by means of said hinged connections being extendible from a folded position closing said compartment to an open position on a horizontal plane defining the level of said upper area to provide a bed extending substantially full length of said section space entirely independent of said lower area, and said horizontal plane being sufficiently high in the section space to the seating of an occupant in the lower area when the panel members are extended to open position.
