Abstract

Peeling potatoes.-In a potato-peeling machine, a stationary cylindrical grater surface coacts with two grater surfaces revoluble in opposite directions, one revoluble surface forming the bottom of the peeling space and the other surface forming a vertical wall opposing the stationary surface. As shown in Fig. 1, the casing 2 is provided with a stationary abrading liner 14, the revoluble abrading bottom 15 is carried by a shaft 3 and the inner abrading cylinder 8 is carried by a sleeve 7 revoluble on the shaft 3. The opposite rotations are effected by bevel gearing 10, 11, 12 and a handle 9. The peeling space is divided into compartments by the radial abrasive partitions 16 of a cell wheel loosely mounted on the shaft 3. Water is supplied at 20 througlthe cover 1 and a drain 21 is provided. In the modification shown in Fig. 4, the cylinder 8 is replaced by pivoted, normally radial graters 25 which rotate in the opposite direction to the bottom 15. Centrifugal force and springs 27 tend to keep the scrapers radial, the potatoes being thereby rotated over the bottom. The graters 25 swing aside to allow the potatoes to pass if the resistance becomes excessive. The graters are of U-section and may be weighted at their outer ends the springs then being dispensed with. The cylinders 8, 14 may be faced with metal brushes and the outer cylinder may rotate.
