Abstract

A refrigeration system, such as a bulk supermarket refrigeration and product display system, induces ambient air external to a building in which the system resides, to contribute to, or provide all of the cooling of within the system, when the external air is cool enough to make a contribution to cooling within the system. The system may save energy and be more environmentally friendly than a traditional system.

Description

DESCRIPTION
CHILLED PRODUCT DISPLAY AND AIR SUPPLY SYSTEM
Backiround There is an increasing amount of pressure by governments to reduce the use of energy. This pressure is being generated by the fears of global warming and reducing supplies or threatened reducing supplies of raw materials for energy such as oil and gas. Generating electrical power by means of fossil fuels generates C02, which is released into the atmosphere with the potential of increased global warming.
There are also the various protocols regarding refrigerant gases and the damage that leakage of these will do to the atmosphere. At present, discussions are taking place on the use of F-Gases (fluorinated compounds) . Inevitably there will be restrictions on the use of these gases and alternatives will have to be found. As a result of the inadvisability of using some of the alternative refrigerants in the public areas a solution will be required that restricts these fluids to controlled areas.
Traditionally, secondary refrigerants such as glycols have been used in the public areas. These fluids are being cooled in an area that is controlled and safe for use of the alternative fluids. There is also an increase in the use of integral chilled display units, each unit using traditional or alternative refrigerants. Unfortunately this does not necessarily reduce energy consumption since the heat rejected must be removed from the retail environment by another means.
Direct expansion refrigerant systems in traditional remote display cabinets have higher refrigerant charges, the probability of refrigerant leakage and of equipment failure is likely due to complexity. Disruption to client trading is more likely.
Chilled Product Display and Air Supply System The chilled product display and air supply system is such that the product display is designed to distribute chilled air supplied from an external source in order to effectively maintain the product temperatures required at constant air volume. Supply and return air flows from the product displays to the air handling unit(s) are essential in order to maintain the energy efficiency of the system. Product displays can be arranged to suit the customer requirements.
There will be no need for pumped or mains condensate drainage from the product displays.
The return/outside air will be cooled by a heat exchanger(s) located in the air handling unit(s). The air handling unit(s) will be fitted with an outside air intake bringing outside air in (where appropriate) and mixing it with return air prior to the cooling coil. The outside air will provide free cooling when the outside air temperatures are suitable. Air mixing will be controlled by means of air volume control.
A refrigeration system will supply the necessary mechanical cooling capacity. An effective means of capacity control will be necessary in order to efficiently meet the wide range of capacity, particularly the low capacity requirement during winter periods. Refrigerants will be selected to suit and the cooling coil(s) and refrigeration systems will be close coupled.
Defrost of the cooling coil(s) will be either forced or air off cycle. Condensate drainage will be required at the air handling unit.
Insulated ducting will be installed, connecting the air handling unit(s) to the product displays. Ducting will be installed to suit the construction of the building and the product display locations.
Separate ducting branches will supply the various temperature levels for the product displays. Temperature control for each branch will be by means of return and outside air mixing together with mechanical refrigeration control in order to maintain the required supply air off coil temperature. Monitoring of the product display temperatures will also be included in the control strategy.
