Abstract
A motor vehicle with at least one tailgate pivotably connected to the vehicle body, wherein the tailgate has at least one opening (3) into or through which, when the tailgate is closed, at least one rear lamp fixed to the body projects, so that the rear lamp is visible from outside.
Description
A motor vehicle with at least one tailgate The present invention relates
to a motor vehicle with at least one tailgate pivotably connected to the vehicle body.
WO 98/46442 Al discloses a vehicle with a tailgate at the back of the vehicle for closing a rear opening and mounted on the vehicle body so as to be pivotable around a vertical axis. When closed, the tailgate adjoins a rear lamp on each side of the body. The tailgate is connected to the body by a top and a bottom hinge, the top hinge being connected to the body above a rear lamp and the bottom hinge being connected below the lamp. It is thus possible for the vertical axis of rotation of the tailgate to go through the rear lamp or theoretically even to lie outside the rear lamp, as seen from the rear opening in the transverse direction of the vehicle.
An aim of the invention is to construct a motor vehicle with a tailgate and enabling the vehicle to be given a unique back view.
Accordingly, the invention is directed to a vehicle as described in the opening paragraph of the present specification wherein the tailgate has at least one opening into or through which, when the tailgate is closed, at least one rear lamp fixed to the body projects, so that the rear lamp is visible from outside.
Usually rear lamps fixed to the body adjoin the rear opening in the rear region, the opening being closable by at least one tailgate. Hitherto known tailgates extend only as far as the rear lamps. In accordance with the invention on the other hand, the tailgate can extend outwards over at least one rear lamp, as seen from the rear opening. Owing however to the opening in the tailgate, the rear lamp remains visible from outside when the tailgate is closed.
Preferably the tailgate is mounted to the vehicle body so as to be pivotable around an at least substantially vertical axis. Tailgates of this construction are already known on box-type delivery vans, which usually have a divided tailgate. The two divisions can be separate tailgates which can be pivoted outwards on each respective side around a vertical axis in order to open the rear region. The two tailgates, however, extend sideways only as far as the rear lamps adjoining the rear opening on each side.
By contrast the tailgate in accordance with the invention, which likewise is pivotable around a vertical axis, extends beyond at least one rear lamp. When the tailgate is closed the lamp projects into or even through the opening.
Advantageously as a result, the vertical axis, seen from the rear opening in the transverse direction, can be outside the at least one rear lamp. In this way the tailgate can be pivoted on ordinary hinges which nevertheless allow the tailgate to turn through a wide angle owing to the outwardly situated axis of rotation.
Further advantages and developments of the invention are set out in the sub-claims.
An example of a motor vehicle made in accordance with the present invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawing, in which: Figure 1 shows a perspective view of a tailgate of a passenger car made in accordance with the present invention; and Figure 2 shows an assembly diagram of the tailgate as shown in Figure 1.
Figure 1 shows the body 1 of a right-hand tailgate or rear door of a passenger car. The right-hand tailgate, together with a left tailgate, closes a rear opening in the car body. Each tailgate is mounted on the vehicle body so as to be pivotable around a vertical axis 4 at the side of the rear opening. Each tailgate closes approximately half of the opening. The two tailgates are without frames, that is have no frame around the window-pane, which adjoins the top of the door body 1 in each case.
On each side, the rear opening in the car is bounded by rear lamps mounted on the body. Each tailgate body 1 is mounted on the vehicle body on two hinges 2 which, seen in the transverse direction of the vehicle, are connected to the body on the side of the rear lamps remote from the rear opening. To prevent the tailgate covering the lamps when closed, the tailgate bodies 1 have an opening 3 which is equal in size to the rear lamps and through which the lamps project so as to be visible from the exterior.
When closed, the two tailgates close the rear opening. In addition each tailgate, when closed, covers the region around the rear lamp, which projects into or through the opening 3. This gives a completely new appearance to the back of the car. This is possible only because of the very far outwardly situated hinges 2 and the resulting very far outwardly situated vertical axis 4 of rotation of the tailgate, behind the rear lamp as seen from the opening.
This makes loading easier. In addition, the far outwardly Situated axis 4 of rotation enables the tailgate to rotate through a wide angle without the hinges 2 needing intermediate guide members.
Owing to the widely outwardly situated axes 4 of rotation, the tailgate body 1 must meet exacting structural requirements. To this end the tailgate body 1, as shown in Figure 2, can have a peripheral supporting frame 5 to which a visible skin 6 and an inner lining part 7 are fastened.
The supporting peripheral frame 5 additionally has a frame support 8 connected to the frame 5, 50 that the opening 3 in the tailgate is peripherally surrounded by the frame 5 and the frame support 8. Alternatively the tailgate body 1 can have a stressed-skin construction in order to meet the structural requirements. For reinforcement in that case, a hinge support preferably in the form of a closed hollow profile should be incorporated in the tailgate body.
