Description

DESCRIPTION
"A HAIR STYLIN* DEVICE" The present invention relates to a hair styling device. The hair styling device of the present invention may take the form of a single purpose, dedicated implement or it may take the form of an attachment which can be coupled to a hair dryer.
The jet of air from a hair dryer is generally strong and un-focused so that wet hair can be dried quickly and efficiently. Some hair dryers are provided with the facility to switch the speed of the jet of air between fast and slow settings, and the temperature of the jet of air between cool, warm and hot settings. Nevertheless, not all hair styles lend themselves to being shaped using the unmodified jet of air output from a hair dryer.
Consequently, a range of devices have been devised for attachment to the nozzle of a hair dryer to increase its versatility in use. One such attachment is the diffuser.
A known diffuser comprises a bowl shaped outer shell or casing, the base of which has an aperture in it leading to a tubular adaptor which facilitates attachment to the nozzle of a hair dryer. The open end of the bowl shaped outer casing is closed by a plate or convex cap so as to define an enclosed space between the facing surfaces of the casing and the cap. A plurality of hollow open end prongs extend outwardly from the cap and in use air from the hair dryer is expelled through these open ended prongs.
The effect of a diffuser is to diffuse the jet of air expelled from the nozzle of the air dryer through a plurality of apertures of relatively small diameter. This has the effect of both slowing the flow of air and cooling it. As a consequence when the diffuser is placed over a section of hair to be dried with the prongs extending into the hair a relatively gentle drying action is achieved. Very little of the hair outside the diffuser is disturbed by the air coming out of the apertures in the ends of the prongs and this makes a diffuser particularly suitable for drying naturally curly hair, permed and waved hair.
However, using a conventional diffuser it is not easy to introduce a wave or curl into straight hair.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a hair shaping device which allows hair to be waved and curled as it is dried.
According to the present invention there is provided a hair styling device comprising a shaped body defining a forward surface from which projects at least one hair curler, which is adapted to pick up a strand of hair and which is rotatable about a central axis thereof to cause the strand of hair to be wrapped around the curler.
In one embodiment of the present invention each hair curler comprises a plurality of elongate pins or prongs projecting from a rotatable base plate mounted in the forward surface of the shaped body and equi-radially spaced from the central axis of rotation thereof. In use, the pins or prongs are pushed into the hair to catch a section of hair therebetween. As the pins or prongs rotate on the rotating base plate this section of hair is caused to wrap around the outside of them. It is envisaged that the or each hair curler might comprise as few as two pins, although with this number of pins the curl imparted to each section of hair as it wraps around them is likely to be quite flat and lacking in body. It is envisaged that better results will be obtain with three or more pins as this will give more openness of curl in the section of hair wrapped around them.
Conveniently, the pins of the or each hair curler diverge radially outwardly from the inner end thereof towards the outer end thereof. This splaying of the pins ensure that hair wrapped around the pins does not easily slip offthem.
In another embodiment of the present invention the or each hair curler may comprise a central prong or finger, and one or more outer pins radially spaced therefrom which is/are rotatable about this central finger. The central finger is generally thicker and longer than the outer pins, and it tapers inwardly from its base. This allows hair to move easily into the gap formed between the central finger and the outer pins. Conveniently, the outer pins are mounted on a circular disc which is mounted in the forward surface of the shaped body and is rotatable about its centre. The central finger may also be mounted on the circular disc for rotation therewith or it may extend through the centre thereof and may be fixed.
In use the hair styling device of the present invention is held against a section of a hair such that the elongate pins or prongs comprising each of the hair curlers are pressed into the hair. By causing the hair curlers to rotate strands of hair are caught up between the pins or prongs and as the hair curlers are further rotated these strands are caused to wrap around the pins or prongs. In this way a wave or curl is imparted to each section of hair.
Where the hair styling device consists of one hair curler it preferably comprises a central prong or finger, and one or more outer pins radially spaced therefrom which is/are rotatable about the central finger. It is envisaged that both the finger and the rotating pins would be relatively long to allow a section of hair to be picked up cleanly and this can be done by the user without requiring the use of hands. The single hair curler allows a considerable degree of control to be exercised over the section of hair which is to be worked on. A section of relatively long hair can be wound along the length of the central finger for a uniform curl result. The single hair curler can also be used to style short hair by placing the ends of the curler (central finger and pins) onto the scalp and then causing the hair curler to rotate to gather the hair into a circular, twisted, textured style.
Rotation of the or each hair curler may be effected using a manually operated lever or by an electric motor. Where the hair shaping device comprises only one hair curler the lever or motor can be connected directly thereto. Where the hair styling device comprises a plurality of hair curlers an arrangement of gears and cogs may be provided to translate movement of the lever/motor into rotation thereof.
By way of example, in one embodiment where there are a plurality of hair curlers these are divided into a first group each of which is spaced relative to the others to define a ring and a second group, each of which is spaced relative to the others to define a second ring outwardly of the first, and a ring gear is positioned between the first inner ring of hair curlers and the second outer ring of hair curlers with the gear teeth on the inner edge thereof in engagement with each of the hair curlers in the first inner group via a gear wheel at the base of each and the gear teeth on the outer edge thereof in engagement with each of the hair curlers in the second outer group via a gear wheel at the base of each. As the ring gear is rotated the hair curlers in the first inner ring rotated in one direction and the hair curlers in the second outer group rotate in the opposite direction. It will be appreciated that the ring gear may be connected to a lever which facilitates manual rotation thereof. To this end the lever may be attached to a ring which is mounted on the shaped body and which is rotatable relative thereto. Alternatively, an electric motor under the control of the user may be used to effect rotation of the ring gear.
Of course, it is also envisaged that each of the hair curlers might be rotated by a single dedicated motor, with all of the motors controlled from a single switch.
Hair is best shaped after it has been wetted and whilst it is dried. Accordingly, in one embodiment of the present invention the hair styling device comprises an integral air blower. In an alternative embodiment the hair styling device comprises means for attachment to the nozzle of a hair dryer. In either case the hair styling device comprises means for directing a stream of air through openings in the forward surface of the shaped body and/or through openings in the elongate prongs or pins thereof. Thus, air passing through the openings can effect a drying action on the strands of hair wrapped around the prongs or pins. In addition, or as an alternative to blowing air past the hair curlers, an electric heating element may be provided in one or more of the prongs/fingers/pins comprising same.
An embodiment of the present invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 shows a perspective view of a hair shaping device according a first embodiment of the present invention in the form of an attachment for a hair dryer; Figure 2 shows a partial schematic view of the operating mechanism of the hair shaping device shown in Figure I with the outer casing and the circular face plate removed to facilitate ease of understanding; Figure 3 shows a perspective view of a hair shaping device according to a second embodiment of the present invention in the form of an attachment for a hair dryer; and Figure 4 shows a perspective view of a hair styling device according to a third embodiment of the present invention in the form of a hand-held device having a single hair curler in the forward end thereof.
Referring to Figure 1 ofthe accompanying drawings there is shown a hair shaping device for use as an attachment to a hair dryer (not shown). The device comprises a bowl shaped outer shell or casing 1 having an integrally formed tubular adaptor 2 in the base thereof which facilitates attachment of the device to the nozzle of a hair dryer (not shown) after the fashion of a conventional diffuser attachment. As an alternative to this arrangement the hair shaping device of the present invention may be provided with an integral air blower and heating element attached to the bowl shaped casing. As yet another alternative the hair shaping device of the present invention may be provided with a handle in place of the tubular adaptor and may be used after the fashion of a hair brush; that is to say the device may be held and worked in the hair with one hand whilst a hair dryer is optionally held and worked in the other.
A circular facing plate 3 is mounted in the mouth of the bowl shaped casing I and is secured in place by suitable fixing means (not shown) which may take the form of screws, clips or the like. The bowl shaped casing 1 and the circular facing plate 3 form between them an enclosed space or cavity which opens, through an aperture in the base of the bowl shaped casing 1, into the tubular adaptor 2. A plurality of hair curlers 4 are mounted on the front of the circular face plate 3 and extend outwardly therefrom. Each hair curler 4 comprise four prongs or pins 5 secured to base plate 6. Each of the prongs is equidistantly spaced from the centre of the base plate 6 and diverges radially outwardly from the point of attachment thereto. Together, the prongs 5 form an open side spool or bobbin around which a strand of hair may be wrapped to impart a curl thereto.
The splayed aspect of the prongs 5 acts to ensure that the curled strand cannot easily slip off the ends thereof.
The base plate 6 is connected via a through hole in the circular facing plate 3 to a respective gear wheel 7 located against the back face thereof and together the gear wheel 7 and the base plate 6 are rotatable in the through hole. In the embodiment of the present invention shown in Figures I and 2 the hair curlers 4 define two distinct groups; a first group of four hair curlers 4a, each of which is spaced relative to the others to define an inner ring, and a second group of eight hair curlers 4b, each of which is spaced relative to the others to define a second outer ring. A ring gear 8 is located between the first inner ring of hair curlers 4a and the second outer ring of hair curlers 4b with the gear teeth 9 on the inner edge thereof in engagement with the gear wheels 7 associated with each of the hair curlers 4a in the first inner group and the gear teeth 10 on the outer edge thereof in engagement with the gear wheels 7 associated with each of the hair curlers 4b in the second outer group. It will be understood that as the ring gear 8 is rotated the hair curlers 4a in the first inner ring rotate in one direction and the hair curlers 4b in the second outer group rotate in the opposite direction.
It will be understood that various means may be employed to rotate the ring gear 8 relative to the gear wheels 7 to effect rotation thereof. Conveniently, the ring gear 8 is connected to a lever which extends through the outer casing and which facilitates manual operation. Alternatively, the ring gear is connected to an electric motor under the control ofthe user. It will also be understood that means other than the ring gear and gear wheels shown in Figure 2 may be employed to effect rotation of each of the hair curlers forming the device.
Referring to Figures I and 2 together it can be seen that there is a through hole 10 through the centre of each pairing of gear wheel 7 and base plate 6 which allows air from a hair dryer attached to the device to be expelled between the prongs 5 extending from the base plate 6.
In use the hair styling device of the present invention is held against a section of wet or dampened hair such that the prongs 5 comprising each of the hair curlers 4a and 4b are pressed into the hair. Then the hair curlers 4a and 4b are rotated to cause strands of hair caught between the prongs 5 to wrap around the outside of the hair curlers 4a and 4b. The arrangement and spacing of the prongs 5 of each hair curler 4a and 4b is such that the hair forms an open cylinder as it is wrapped around them. This cylinder of hair is held in place and prevented from slipping off the prongs 5 by the outwardly splayed aspect thereof. Now, as the hair is dried by blowing air through the through hole 10 in the bottom of each hair curler, the curl imparted to it by the hair curlers is fixed.
In the embodiment of the present invention described with reference to Figures I and 2 the hair curlers each comprise four prongs. However, it will be understood that this number can be varied without departing from the present invention. It is envisaged that each hair curler might comprise as few as two pins, although with this number of pins the curl imparted to each strand of hair as it wraps around them is likely to be quite flat and lacking in body. It is envisaged that better results will be obtained with three or more pins as this will give more openness of curl in the strand of hair wrapped around them.
Referring now to Figure 3 there is shown a second embodiment of hair styling device in accordance with the present invention. This embodiment of the present invention is identical to that of Figure 1 in all respects except in the arrangement of the prongs forming the hair curlers 4. Here, each of the hair curlers 4 comprises a central prong or finger 11, and two outer pins 12 and 13. The central finger 11 is generally thicker and longer than the outer pins 12 ends 13, and it tapers inwardly from its base.
This allows hair to move easily into the gap formed between the central finger 11 and the outer prongs 12 and 13. In addition, air vents are provided in the sides and/or the end of the finger 11 which allows air passing therethrough to effect a drying action in any hair wrapped around the dryer.
Operation of the hair styling device shown in Figure 2 is much the same as for that shown in Figure 1. The outer prongs 12 and 13 are rotatable about the longitudinal axis of the central finger 1 1 and this ensures that hair caught between the central finger I 1 and outer prongs 12 and 13 is wrapped around the outer prongs 12 and 13. Body or thickness is imparted to the curl by the increased diameter of the central finger 11. As shown in Figure 3 the central finger 1 1 is mounted on a base plate 14 with the two outer pins 12 and 13, and the base plate 14 is rotatable using, for example the operating mechanism described with reference to Figure 2. As an alternative to this the central finger 11 may be fixed and the two outer prongs 12 and 13 may rotate about it on an annular base plate.
Referring to Figure 4 there is shown a hair styling device comprising a bowl shaped outer casing 20 connected through the base thereof to a handle 21, the outer surface of which is profiled to facilitate being held in the hand. The handle 21 may be solid or it may be tubular and the free end 22 thereof may be adapted to allow connection to the nozzle of a hair dryer. A circular facing plate 23 is mounted in the mouth or opening of the bowl-shaped casing 20. This plate 23 is secured in place by suitable fixing means (not shown) such as clips or screws. A single hair curler 24 is provided in the centre of the facing plate 23 and extends outwardly therefrom. The hair curler comprises a central prong or finger 25 which tapers inwardly from the base thereof to the free end thereof and six pins 26 equi-radially spaced about the finger 25. The pins 26 are mounted on circular plate 27 which is rotatable about the central axis of the finger 25 which is fixed. A lever may be used to rotate the circular plate 27, or it can be connected to the handle 21 which is rotatable relative to the outer casing 20. Alternatively, the circular plate 27 may be rotated by an electric motor which is operated by a switch mounted in the handle. In any event, rotation of the pins 26 about the central finger 25 allows a section of hair caught therebetween to be curled around the pins, thereby imparting a curl to it.
As shown air holes 28 are provided in the facing plate 23 through which air from a hair dryer or from an integral blower can be directed over a section of hair wrapped around the hair curler to impart a drying action. Alternatively, a heating element may be provided in the central finger.
The hair styling device of the present invention allows hair to be curled and shaped in a way which is simply not possible with conventional diffusers and hair styling devices. - 12
