Liquid raised up to solid; solid dipped into liquid.-In an acetylene generator in which an upright cylindrical carbide container b fits and telescopes within an opening c in the top of an upright water container a and can be adjusted therein according to the amount of gas to be generated, the adjustment is effected by furnishing the carbide container externally with a rolling rubber or other flexible ring f which supports the container by seating itscifinthe opening in which the container moves. The opening is formed with a cone shaped seating g which forms, with the carbide container, a \/-shaped recess for the reception of the flexible ring.
