Liquid raised up to solid; solid dipped into liquid.-In an acetylene generator the generating chamber d, the water vessel c and the gas-holder a are rigidly connected together, and a to-and-fro motion of the water is produced in the generating chamber, so controlling the generation according to the volume of gas in the bell b, by the movements of a plunger e, Fig. 1, carried by the latter and co-operating with the water vessel c; alternatively, an analogous effect is produced bv supporting the carbide basket f, Fig. 3 on a system of rods 3 normally held in a raised position by a spring 4 or by a float, but which as the bell b falls, is depressed by a projection 5 carried by the. latter.. The projection 5 may be provided with means of adjustment, and by making the rod 3 as a float, the spring 4 may be dispensed with. In the construction shown in Fig. 1, the plunger e may also be adjustably mounted on the bell b, and it may be supported thereon by a spring so as to be depressed by hand at starting, and it may be hollow and fitted with a hand-controlled valve to allow the entry of water, so varying its weight.
