Abstract
240,419. Sperry Gyroscope Co., (Assignees of Mills, C. B.). Sept. 25, 1924, [Convention date]. Fluid supply for sirens, whistles, and horns.- Ships' whistles &c. of the type blown by compressed air are arranged to emit a fume or cloud so as to identify visibly the particular whistle sounding, in the same way that the puff of steam identifies a steam whistle. A lamp may be used at night to illuminate the fume or cloud. In the apparatus shown, when the whistle lanyard 13 is pulled, a valve 11 admits compressed air to a pipe 30 connected to a nozzle 32 which, by ejector action, draws stannic chloride from a tank 35 and blows it up a tube 23, thus producing a fume or cloud at the top of the ship's funnel F. An automatic valve cuts off the compressed air supply if the whistle blast be prolonged beyond a certain limit. Access of air to the stannic chloride is prevented by a flap 40 which is raised by the blast from the nozzle 32 and falls by gravity. A blast of air from a pipe 22 scavenges the pipe 23. In the sound-producing apparatus described in connection with the invention, compressed air from a pipe 14, Fig. 6, vibrates a diaphragm 15 by escaping between it and a seating 16. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) describes also the use at night of a lamp instead of the production of the fume or cloud or to illuminate steam from a steam whistle. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
