Abstract
A PCB 10 having edge contacts 18,20 for testing of the circuit board. The contacts may include parts 22 that extend onto the working surfaces 12,14 of the PCB.
Description
( _ _ PRINTED CIRCUIT BOARD
The present invention relates to a printed circuit board and, in particular, to a printed circuit board having a test contact for allowing the testing of 5 circuitry and devices mounted on one or both of the working surfaces thereof.
With increasing device miniaturization, the density to which circuitry in components are mounted on printed circuit boards is such that, with, for example, tightly packed components, little access remains for test points and 10 connectors by which the circuitry and components on the printed circuit board can be tested. I Such densely packed printed circuit boards are commonly found, in particular, in current mobile phones where both upper, and lower surfaces of 15 the printed circuit board, i.e. the socalled working surfaces, are tightly packed with components.
Such high density leaves little space for test access which can have disadvantageous cost implication when considering circuitry component 20 testing, or can limit the manner in which the circuitry/components are available for testing.
The present invention seeks to provide for a printed circuit board exhibiting advantages over known such circuit boards.
According to one aspect of the present invention there is provided a printed circuit board having a test contact for connection to test means to allow for the testing of circuitry on the printed circuit board, wherein the said contact is provided on an edge surface of the printed circuit board.
( Providing the test access point on an edge surface of the printed circuit board, i.e. the surface away from both of the aforementioned working surfaces, ease of access for testing procedures is advantageously provided.
5 Advantageously, and in particular to improve the secure mounting of the test contact of the printed circuit board, at least a portion of the printed circuit board can extend onto one of the working surfaces.
The mounting can be further secured by including a portion of the said 10 test contact that extends into a via hole located in an edge region of one of the working surfaces of the printed circuit board.
Yet further, connection from the components/circuitry to the test contact can be achieved by the means of, for example, a metal run being brought from 15 the respective working surface to the edge of the printed circuit board or, alternatively, by way of a via hole such as that which maybe used as noted above in order to assist in securely mounting the test contact to an edge surface of the printed circuit board.
20 As will therefore be appreciated, in plating contacts onto an edge surface of the printed circuit board, this avoids the need to use part of either of the two working surfaces where the circuitry/components required on the printed circuit board are mounted.
25 Advantageously, an edge surface of the printed circuit board is arranged to be plated with copper in order to provide for the said test contact.
The invention is described further hereinafter, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawing which illustrates a perspective 30 view of a printed circuit board illustrating embodiments of the present invention.
( Turning now to the accompanying drawing, there is illustrated a printed circuit board 10, but without circuitry/components shown, and which includes upper 12 and lower 14 working surfaces upon which the components would be mounted in use.
A printed circuit board such as that illustrated, and which is densely packed with components, is commonly found in, for example, mobile radio communication devices.
10 Such printed circuit boards include an edge surface 16 generally orthogonal to the two working surfaces 12,14.
In accordance with the present invention, test contacts 18, 20 are provided on the edge surface 16 of the printed circuit board.
The test contacts 18,20 can advantageously comprise copper contacts plated onto the edge surface 16.
The illustrated contacts 18 comprise mere copper contact pads formed 20 solely on the edge surface 16 of the printed circuit board 10.
In accordance with an alternative embodiment, a copper test connector 20 can be provided which also includes a portion 22 extending onto an edge region of the upper working surface 12 of the printed circuit board 10 so as to 25 improve the security with which the test contact 20 is mounted to the printed circuit board 10.
In a further, but not illustrated embodiment, a portion 22 of the test contact 20 can extend into a via hole so as to further improve the security of 30 mounting of the contact pad 20 onto the printed circuit board 10.
( The use of such a via hole so as to improve the mechanical strength of the mounting of the test contact on to the printed circuit board 10 can also assist in providing a means of electrical contact between the test contact 20 and the components/circuitry to be mounted on the printed circuit board 10 5 and to be tested.
As will be appreciated, the present invention advantageously reduces the area required for test access and so improves the ability to deep bug, for example, mobile phone handsets, were appropriate test access would 10 otherwise have been denied.
