Abstract
Colloidal sulphur is prepared by adding a protective colloid to a polysulphide solution, preferably an alkali or ammonium polysulphide, acidifying the solution, and filtering and washing the precipitated sulphur. Suitable protective colloids are gelatine, glue, gum, or waste sulphite-cellulose liquor. An electrolyte, such as sodium chloride, may be added to ensure rapid separation of the sulphur. The sulphuretted hydrogen evolved may be absorbed in alkali and employed for the preparation of further polysulphide. According to an example, sulphur is dissolved in caustic soda by warming, glue added to the cooled solution, and sulphuric acid slowly run in while stirring. The sulphur is separated by decantation and filtration and washed with water until free from alkali sulphate. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 177,103.
