- 1 SHAPED ARTICLE OF CLOTHING AND METHOD OF MAKING SUCH AN
ARTICLE OF CLOTHING.
This invention relates to a shaped article of clothing and to a method of making it. It relates particularly to bras but also to allied articles of clothing such as swimsuits and bikinis, knitted underwear with concealed bust support, woven underwear with concealed bust support, shape controlling underwear and knitted and woven outerwear with an integral bust support including T -
shirts. One of the problems with existing underwear lies in the fact that most underwear will not only fail to retain its shape off the body, but will not readily adjust to body characteristics when being worn.
The present invention seeks to provide an article of clothing in which one or more of the above disadvantages are obviated or reduced.
According to a first aspect of the invention, an article of clothing comprises a polyester knitted jersey fabric which is moulded in a moulding operation to the desired body shape.
Suitably the knitted jersey fabric is a version of the "punto di roma" family.
Preferably the knitted jersey fabric is laminated to a decorative material forming the exterior of the article of clothing. This decorative material may be a warp knitted synthetic fabric such as polyamide or polyester with Iycr L) The materials may be hot melt laminated using a thermoplastic adhesive.
The finished article of clothing may be sewn up from the moulded laminate in a conventional way.
According to a second aspect of the invention, a method of making an article of clothing comprises taking a polyester knitted jersey fabric and moulding the fabric in a moulding operation to the desired body shape.
Ace Be e À À e. c À e e - 2 Suitably, the knitted jersey fabric is a version of the Upunto di Roman family.
Preferably, the knitted jersey fabric is laminated to a decorative material forming the exterior of the article of clothing. This decorative material may be a warp knitted synthetic fabric such as polyamide or polyester with Iycra.
The materials may be hot melt laminated using a thermoplastic adhesive.
The finished article of clothing may be sewn up from the moulded laminate.
One embodiment of the invention will now be described in greater detail, by way of example: ln this embodiment, the invention is discussed in relation to the manufacture of a bra, but, as will become apparent, it has a wider application to other garments as mentioned above.
Basically, in this embodiment, a bra is made from two materials laminated together. These comprise a first material having moulding and shape retention properties and a second material, laminated over the first material, which provides aesthetic appeal to the garment.
The first material comprises a knitted polyester double jersey fabric. While it is believed that most, if not all, knitted polyester double jersey fabrics can be used, it is preferred to use a weft knitted Punts di roma" fabric because this has special characteristics which make it particularly suitable for retaining its shape. This Upunto di roma" fabric is made from 100% polyester yarn using two yarns, the relative tensions of which are carefully adjusted to control the stiffness of the resulting fabric. Thus, in a particular example, the material extension under a load of 1.5 Kg was 49% + 15% both in length and width.
The second material is a warp knitted synthetic and elasthane fabric such as nylon or polyester with Iycra It as laminated to the Upunto di roma" fabric using a known hot melt lamination procedure with a thermoplastic adhesive.

- 3 Currently, the preferred adhesive is polyurethane, but other possible adhesives include polyester and combinations thereof.
The laminated material is then moulded into appropriately shaped cups which are then sewn up by conventional methods to create a finished bra. This moulding takes place by sandwiching the laminate between two heated forms.
To provide the correctly moulded material, it is important, if the best results are to be obtained, for the moulding time, pressure and temperature settings to be carefully selected. In one example the pressure was 3 bar, the temperature was 202 C and the time was 35 seconds. It is believed that the moulding would be successful over the following ranges: Pressure: 2.5 to 3.5 bar Temperature: 170 to 215 C Time 20 seconds to 50 seconds The above described embodiment makes it possible to mould bra cups throughout most of the usual range (for example, up to DD cups). the cups will retain their shape off the body and will also retain stretch characteristics after moulding thus enhancing the comfort of the garment. The garment produced is durable enough to wash in a domestic washing machine.
It will be understood that modifications of and additions to the above described embodiment may be made without departing from the scope of the invention. For example, in addition to the production of bras, the invention could be used for allied articles of clothing such as swimsuits and bikinis, knitted underwear with concealed bust support, woven underwear with concealed bust support, shape controlling underwear and knitted and woven outerwear with an integral bust support including T shirts.
Furthermore, as has been stated, while Upunto di Roman fabric is preferred, it is believe that many other double jersey polyester fabrics will have similar, if not as good, characteristics. Other materials may be used for lamination with the punto di Roman material such as any synthetic yarn warp or weft knit with or
