Abstract

238,720. Phillips, E. B., and West, W. Sept. 19, 1924. Fatty oils, extracting by pressure &c. - An apparatus for treating fish offal to convert it into fish meal comprises a vertical closed cylindrical casing a containing an inner perforated cylinder b; steam is admitted from pipes s to the space between the cylinders to cook the offal. After cooking, the offal is compacted by a piston c actuated by a hydraulic cylinder f, the expressed moisture passing through a grid t'o a steam trap k arranged in the bottom g of the casing. The bottom g is formed as a massive slide block carried on wheels l running in channel rails m. Ramps n are arranged alongside, the rails below the casing a, and are adapted to engage the bottom g as it moves to it's operative position and to force it tightly home against the lower end of the casing. The bottom g is moved by a hydraulic cylinder i. After the offal has been compacted and the moisture expressed the bottom g is moved to one side and the piston c actuated to discharge the compressed mass into a wheeled tub u, the inner cylinder b being tapered outwardly at its lower end to facilitate the discharge.
