Abstract
Cellulose acetate is prepared by treating cellulose or hydrocellulose with keten either alone or in the presence of an inert solvent such as ether, benzene, toluene, kerosine, and benzene, or of glacial acetic acid or acetic anhydride which serves to moisten the cellulose before the addition of the keten. A small proportion of a catalyst such as zinc chloride, chlorsulphonic acid, benzene sulphonic acid, or sulphuric acid may be added to the liquid moistening-agent. In carrying out the process, the cellulosic material which may be cotton in its usual commercial forms, paper, wood pulp, wood flour, straw, jute, or regenerated cellulose, is placed in a closed chamber, which is exhausted to free the cellulose from air, and keten gas then admitted; during the reaction the mixture is energetically stirred; reaction is complete when the mass acquires a molasses-like consistency due to the solution of the acetate in the moistening-agent or when a sample shows solubility in acetic acid. The reaction may be carried out under pressure.
