Abstract

An over-run brake system 1 for a towed vehicle such as a caravan, also has an air compressor and receiver 2, and air pressure regulator 3. An electrically operated pneumatic valve 4 triggered by a stop lamp circuit allows air at a pre-determined pressure to an intensifying unit 5 which applies pressure to stop-collar 6 pushing over-run brake rod 7 to activate vehicle brakes 8. Lightly applying pressure to a pedal of a towing vehicle applies the brakes of the towed vehicle, damping any instability; while a normal brake application applies all the brakes simultaneously, eliminating the time lag resulting from compressing a telescopic tow hitch, thereby improving stability under braking.

DESCRIPTION.
BRAKE INTENSIFYING SYSTEM.
This invention relates to a Brake Intensifying System for a vehicle which is adapted to be towed by a towing vehicle, and particularly but, not exclusively, to a brake intensifying system for a caravan to be towed by a car or other towing vehicle.
If the caravan and car combination loading and nose weight limits are correct, the combination is normally stable on the road. However, when overtaken by large h. g. v's wind buffeting or suction can affect the caravan and snaking may occur. This can then be exaggerated when travelling down-hill, then the best way to return stability to the combination is to accelerate the car to create a pull between car and caravan, which acts to damp out the instability. However, this is not always possible if the speed of the combination is too high at the on-set of snaking.
Under such circumstances acceleration would only aggravate the situation.
Over-run braking systems are activated by the forward motion of the caravan, pushing the car when the brakes are activated, this creates pressure at the tow-hitch which is transmitted via a telescopic arrangement to the over-run rod which applies the caravan brakes.
When the combination is snaking and unstable however, pressure at tow hitch is intermittent and variable in direction, and application of the car brakes could result in a jack-knife situation.
According to this invention there is provided a brake intensifying system for a towable vehicle: comprising: :: :: : A compressor and air receiver, a pressure regulator electro-pneumatic valve, and brake intensifying unit, activated by stop lights of towing vehicle, by lightly applying towing vehicle brakes. Caravan brakes are applied at a pre-determined pressure to create a pull between car and caravan thus damping out any instability.
Under normal braking, towing vehicle and caravan brakes are activated simultaneously, due to operation of the brake intensifying unit, eliminating the time lag the caravan takes to compress the telescopic arrangement. Thus creating a more stable combination under braking conditions.

The system comprising: Brake Intensifying Unit powered by compressor, air receiver and regulator.
2. A brake system according to claim 1. wherein the system utilizes the towable vehicles brakes.
3. A brake system according to any one of the preceeding claims, wherein an electrically operated pneumatic valve detects when towing vehicles brakes are activated, and activates to operate main intensifying unit.
4. A brake system according to any one of preceding claims wherein the system is powered from towing vehicles power system.
5. A brake intensifying system that allows the towable vehicles brakes to be activated independant of the towing vehicles brakes by applying light pedal pressure.
6. A brake intensifying system that applies towing and towable vehicles brakes simultaneously, thus eliminating time delay of normal over-run braking systems.
