Abstract
An over-run hydraulic braking system for a towed vehicle consisting of a ball joint, hydraulic cylinders and an electromagnetic switch. The hydraulic cylinders are low pressure and high pressure for jerky traffic type of situation and emergency braking respectively. The electromagnetic switch which is operable during reversing to close a valve in the brake pipe, is linked to the electrical signal from the reversing lights of the towing vehicle. The system provides a braking system for the towed vehicle separate from that of the towing vehicle. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Self Braking Hydraulic System Unit
The invention relates to a self braking system for a towed vehicle. The current practise is that the towed vehicle does not have any braking means of its own and is totally dependent upon the brakes of the towing vehicle. Presented here is an independent braking system for a towed caravan, trailer or any other vehicle. The unit is mounted with four fastening points on the centre of the hitch.
According to the present invention as soon as the towing vehicle stops or slows down, the towed vehicle brake cylinder plunger is pushed and the braking action takes place. The hydraulic cylinder is of dual pressure type, low and high pressure, the low pressure action is required for traffic situation to avoid jerky motion and the high pressure action is necessary for harder and emergency braking.
The specific embodiment of the invention is described with reference to the accompanying drawing. The drawing shows the sectional elevation ofthe self braking hydraulic system, layout.
Consisting of, the low and high pressure chamber, the hitching ball joint, the electromagnetic switch, and hydraulic connections.
The release of braking action is automatic once the towing vehicle accelerates hereby pulling the main shaft away from the plunger. The controlled pressure from the pressure chambers is passed through the electromagnetic switch, which cuts off the hydraulic fluid flow, during reversing.
The electro-magnetic switch, is wired through the reversing lights layout, and the switch is automatically activated, when the towing vehicle shifts into reverse during parking.
The self braking system on a towed vehicle would be particuiarly useful during a downhill run. The force of the towed vehicle onto the towing vehicle would activate the braking system of the former thereby taking some of braking load independently.
This is safety factor and is particularly useful in poor weather.
1. A self braking hydraulic system unit for a towed vehicle comprising a hitching joint, hydraulic pressure chambers and electromagnetic switch operated by an electrical signal from the towing vehicle reversing lights. The arrangement enables the toward vehicle to have its own braking system.
The unit is mounted on the centre of the hitch.
2. A self braking hydraulic system as claimed in
Claim 1 has hydraulic cylinders of dual pressure type for jerky motion and for harder emergency braking respectively.
3. A self braking hydraulic system as claimed in
Claim 2 incorporates an electromagnetic switch which operates in conjunction with the towing vehicle reversing lights to cut out the hydraulic fluid flow during reversing.
4. A self braking hydraulic system for a toward vehicle substantially as described herein with reference to Fig. 1 of accompanying drawings 1/1.
