Abstract

When deceleration of a vehicle towing a trailer is detected, the trailer brakes are operated hydraulically. As illustrated, the deceleration is detected by relative movement between a piston 13 and a cylinder 14 connected between a tow hitch 12 and the trailer chassis. When the towing vehicle and trailer are reversing, the trailer brakes are disabled by a flap being deployed to prevent rearward movement of the piston relative to the cylinder. In a second embodiment deceleration of the towing vehicle is signalled electrically to the trailer with the signal powering a hydraulic actuator. <IMAGE>

Description

Trailer Brake Svstem The present invention relates to a trailer brake system.
According to the present invention there is provided a trailer brake system comprising means for detecting the deceleration of a vehicle towing the trailer, said detecting means triggering actuating means for applying braking force to the trailer.
Preferably, the trailer travels on wheels which include hydraulically powered hub brakes and braking force is applied to the hub brakes.
Preferably, said actuating means includes an hydraulic fluid supply communicating with said hub brakes, said hydraulic fluid being displaced upon deceleration of the trailer to cause the hub brakes to be applied.
Preferably, the trailer comprises a first part connected to the towing vehicle and a second part movably connected to said first part and deceleration of the towing vehicle is detected through movement of the second part with respect to the first part causing displacement of the hydraulic fluid and braking force to be applied to the trailer.
Alternatively, deceleration of the towing vehicle is signalled electrically to the trailer, said signal powering the actuating means.
Embodiments of the invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a first embodiment of a trailer brake system according to the invention; and Figure 2 is a perspective view of a second embodiment of the trailer brake system according to the invention.
Referring now to the drawings wherein similar numerals have been used to indicate like parts, there is shown a trailer brake system generally indicated at 10 according to the invention. A first embodiment of the brake system 10 comprises an hydraulic ram 11 fitted to the rear of a hitch 12 of a trailer. The hitch 12 is fitted to the rear of a vehicle (not shown) which tows the trailer. The ram 11 comprises a piston 13 which is slidably inserted into one end 15 of a sleeve 14. The end 16 of the piston 13 remote from the sleeve 14 is connected to the hitch 12, while the end 17 of the sleeve 14 remote from the piston 13 extends to form the remainder of the chassis (not shown) of the trailer.
When the trailer is being towed by a vehicle, the ram 11 tends to extend with the piston 13 being withdrawn from the sleeve 14, thus increasing the internal volume of the sleeve. When the vehicle towing the trailer decelerates, the sleeve 14 tends to move over the piston 13 and reduce the internal volume of the sleeve.
The sleeve 14 is filled with hydraulic fluid 18, which is supplied through a removable cap 19. A tube 20 communicates with the hydraulic fluid 18 stored in the sleeve 14. Changes in the internal volume of the sleeve 14 cause a corresponding displacement of the hydraulic fluid 18 within the tube 20.
The tube 20 splits into two further tubes 21, each of which is connected to respective hubs 23 of the trailer wheels 22. Compression of the ram 11 when the towing vehicle brakes thus causes the hydraulic fluid 18 to flow into the hubs 23 where it causes brake pads (not shown) to bear against the inside surface of the hub and thus apply braking force to the trailer.
A disadvantage of the first embodiment is that when the towing vehicle reverses, the ram 11 is compressed causing the trailer brakes to be applied unnecessarily.
To obviate this problem, a flap (not shown) capable of being deployed between the piston 13 and the sleeve 14 must be provided. Thus, when the flap is deployed and the towing vehicle subsequently reverses, the piston 13 bears against the flap and does not displace the hydraulic fluid 18 from the sleeve 14 and cause the brakes to be applied.
In a second embodiment of the invention, Figure 2, the brake system 100 includes a piston 13 and a sleeve 14 which are fixed relative to one another. A pair of electrical leads 24 are connected to the brake signal of the towing vehicle. When the brakes are applied in the towing vehicle, power is supplied through the leads 24.
The leads 24 drive an actuator (not shown) located within the sleeve 14 which, when power is supplied, causes the hydraulic fluid 18 to be displaced from the sleeve 14 as before. This obviates the need for a flap to be deployed when the towing vehicle is to be reversed.
It will be seen that, where an electrical reverse signal is available, it is possible for the leads 24 to be employed in the first embodiment to deploy the flap automatically when the towing vehicle begins to reverse.
The invention is not limited to the embodiments described herein which may be modified or varied without departing from the scope of the invention.
