Abstract
A display device has a plurality of circular display trays 2, 4, 6, 8 each receiving a product (10, 12, 14, 16, figure 1) or a colour relating to that product, the trays being supported on a central support pillar or shaft 9 such that the trays are displaced vertically from one another and may be rotated independently to bring a particular product, or colour relating to that product, into adjacent relationship with a different product or colour relating to that product. The trays 2, 4, 6, 8 may be mounted on the support shaft 9 using a bearing arrangement 20, 22, 24, 26, and the products may be cosmetic products, e.g. hair colourants, nail varnishes, lipsticks and eye shadows, with differently coloured products of a particular type displayed on each shelf, the diameter of the trays 2, 4, 6, 8 progressively decreasing from the lowest shelf to the highest. One of the display surfaces 2, 4, 6, 8 may have means (21, figure 3a) for displaying a sample of hair (10, figure 3a), and one of the surfaces 2, 4, 6, 8 may have means (26, figure 4a) for illustrating colours of lip colourant, which may be in the form of a chip (25, figure 4a) which resembles the tip of a lipstick. One of the display surfaces may further contain recesses (27, figure 5a) for receiving compacts of eye shadow. In use, a customer may select a particular product, e.g a hair colourant, of a particular colour from one shelf and then rotate the other shelves in order to select different products, e.g lipsticks, nail varnishes, face powders etc. of a matching, similar, or different colour.
Description
DISPLAY DEVICE
The present invention relates to a display device, and one example of the device is for the display of various cosmetic products which impart colour to a surface to which they are applied. The products may, for example, be any one of hair colourants, lip colourants, nail varnishes, skin powders and eye colourants.
It has hitherto been known to display cosmetic products on a shop counter by grouping containers of the product, for example a set of bottles with different colours of nail varnish in an array which allows the consumer to move progressively from one end of a spectrum of colours to another. However, while this enables the user to choose a colour of her choice, it requires a fresh selection process for each of several different types of cosmetic colourants.
According to the present invention we now provide a display device for displaying several different types of material of different colourations, intended to be used in conjunction with one another, comprising: a plurality of separate display surfaces each receiving a respective product or a material corresponding to that product to illustrate the product's colour, and means for supporting the various display surfaces so that each can be moved independently of the others in order to bring a product of a particular colour into adjacent relationship with a different product of a related colour
The various display surfaces are movable relative to one another, so that each one of them can be moved independently of its neighbours.
Preferably the various display surfaces are trays which may be rotatable about a common axis so that each can be rotated to bring a particular part of the colour range into association with chosen colours of a different type of cosmetic product.
It is known to associate various different cosmetic colourant products into colour selections which can be classed as"warm"where the various colours in a set are relatively bright and have strong colour tints, or"cool"where the shades are generally pastel shades and have a less bright overall appearance, or"neutral"in which the set of colours gives an impression which is neither"warm"nor"cool". Following this known display principle it is possible for the colourants to be arranged on their respective
display stands so as to be grouped together in these"warm","cool", and"neutral", sets.
In order that the present invention may more readily be understood the following description is given, merely by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a top plan view of one embodiment of the display device in accordance with the present invention;
Figure 2 is a side elevation of the display device of Figure 1,
Figure 3a is a vertical sectional view of the periphery of the hair colourant tray and shows a meche of synthetic hair which has been coloured with the particular hair colourant being illustrated;
Figure 3b is a top plan view showing the clip and the hair meche shown in Figure 3a;
Figure 4a is a vertical sectional view of the periphery of the lip colourant tray %. L UA I. L I L."ay showing the recess for a bottle of lip colourant and a chip resembling the end of a lipstick, having the colour of a product to be represented;
Figure 4b is a top view of the part of the lip tray shown in Figure 4 ;
Figure 5a is a vertical sectional view of the periphery of the eye colourant tray showing a recess to receive a compact of eye colourant ; and
Figure Sa is a top plan view of the portion of tray periphery shown in Figure Sa. The accompanying drawings show one example of a display stand in accordance with the present invention and in this case the individual display holder surfaces are in the form of trays which, in this case, rotate about a vertical axis. The trays are circular in shape so that it is possible for the user, or a consultant who is using the display to help a user select cosmetic products, to rotate the individual trays so as to bring the desired peripheral portion of any one of those trays in front of the user, and to do this equally for each of the various trays.
In Figure 1, the largest tray 2 is positioned lower than the other trays 4,6 and 8, as can be seen in Figure 2, and the particular cosmetic product displayed is in the form of a plurality of meches of synthetic hair, each of which has had applied thereto a different hair colouring product in a particular supplier's range. Such a meche is shown in more detail at 10 in Figures 3a and 3b, and is part of a series 10, lOa, 10b.... shown
in Figure 1.
The next tray 4 above the hair colourant tray 2 includes recesses to receive lip colourants, again arranged in a colour-significant sequence, and displayed in the form of individual sample lip-sticks illustrated in Figure 1 as 12,12a, 12b, etc.
Likewise, the third tray 6 of the stack includes recesses for receiving a plurality of sample bottles 14,14a, 14b, 14c, etc of nail varnish.
Finally the uppermost, smallest diameter, tray has a plurality of circumferentially arranged recesses to receive sample bottles 16,16a, 16b, 16c, etc. of eye shadow.
The four trays 2,4, 6 and 8 are each rotatably mounted on a central vertical pillar 9 so as to be rotatable independently of all the other three trays.
As shown in Figure 2, the hair colourant tray 2 is supported on a bearing device 20 mounted on the shaft 9, and likewise the lip colourant tray 4, the nail colourant tray 6 and the eye colourant tray 8 are similarly supported on respective bearing devices 22, 24 and 26. Preferably the four bearing devices, 22,24 and 26 each comprise a self contained roller bearing assembly having its internal periphery secured to the shaft 9 and its external portion secured to the tray, thereby allowing the respective tray to rotate smoothly and noiselessly relative to the shaft 9.
Figure 2 also shows a stand 18 having a base 19 so as to support the four trays 2,4, 6 and 8 stably above a ground or other surface.
Preferably the various circular trays are subdivided into sectors in which products of a particular range may be assembled together, for example such that one sector of the eye shadow tray 8 may include one range of eye shadow compositions whereas another sector may include a different range, where the colours may be very similar between one range and the other, but the nature of the eye shadow product differs. The same may apply to the hair colourants in samples 10 on tray 2, the lip colourants 12 on tray 4, and the nail varnish samples 14 on tray 6. Equally any of the product ranges may be grouped with the colours of a"warm"range together in one sector, and the colours of"cool"and/or"neutral"ranges in separate sectors.
Figure 3 a illustrates a hair meche-mounting clip 21 secured to the top of the tray 2, and holding a meche 10 of synthetic hair, coloured with the respective composition.
The same hair meche 10 and clip 21 are shown in plan view in Figure 3b.
The hair colourant compositions mounted on the tray 2 may comprise various different ranges of hair colourant composition, each of which has a range of colours which may resemble those of other types of composition but the bottles of the compositions will be arranged in their respective sectors on the tray, and the sector for a given range may be sub-divided into various colour spectrum classifications.
Figure 4a illustrates a peripheral portion of the lip colourant tray 4 and shows a recess 22 in the top of the tray, and an overlying plate 23 having a respective recess 24 which, together with the recess 22 forms a relatively deep mounting for a lipstick or other elongate dispenser of lip colourant. In order to depict the colouration of the lip composition in question, a plastic chip 25 resembling the tip end of a lip stick is integrally formed with a bracket 26 which is then adhered to the respective peripheral portion of the tray 4. This allows the user to appreciate, at a glance, the colour of the lip colourant composition in question, but the presence of a sample of that lip colourant composition in the recesses 22 and 24 (not shown in Figure 4a or 4b) allows the user to remove that dispenser and to apply some of the composition to her lips in order to see the effect created by personal application of that composition.
The plate 23 and tray 4 are shown in plan view in Figure 4b where the chip 25 and its bracket 26 are also illustrated.
As with the hair colourant compositions, there may be various different types of colourant, for example a so called lip gloss of relatively syrupy constituency, the more waxy conventional lipstick or even a more liquid composition which is traditionally painted onto the lips. These types of lip colourant may be arranged in their respective sectors and, as in the case of the hair colourant tray, the sectors of a particular range may subdivided into colour classifications.
Figure 5a shows in plan view a peripheral portion of the eye colourant tray 8 with a recess 27 in which will fit a conventional"compact"of eye shadow or other eye colourant material. A circular nature of this recess 27 is more clearly visible in the plan view of Figure 5b.
