Abstract

For the purpose of preventing or controlling the shrinkage of hydrated cellulose products, such as artificial silk, films, and bottle capsules, the water of hydration of such hydrated celluloses is displaced by means of glycerin and is absorbed by one or more soluble deliquescent salts incorporated with the material; these salts can be subsequently removed by washing, so permitting the product, on drying, to shrink. In the case of fabrics woven partly of artificial silk so treated, or of mixed yarns, the shrinkage produces the effects of craping. For the treatment, a solution of glycerin and zinc chloride is conveniently employed, a base or zinc acetate being added for the purpose of neutralizing the acidity of the zinc chloride; or calcium or magnesium chloride, if necessary with an addition of calcium or magnesium acetate, may be used in place of zinc chloride. The degree of hydration retained and the consequent shrinkage can be modified by varying the strength of the solution and the relative proportion of its constituents.
