A portable pallet unit (1) adapted to be carried by a vehicle, comprising an insulated container (3), a refrigeration unit comprising an evaporator (6) and a condenser (9), the refrigeration unit being provided with means for electrical connection to a battery of the vehicle, and further comprising a power management system (12, 13) which, in use, monitors and reduces or cuts off the power drawn from the battery when the power available falls below a predetermined level.

Description

2362702 TEMPERATURE CONTROLLED PALLET The present invention relates to a
temperature controlled pallet (TCP) for the storage and transport of perishable goods.
It is known to provide vans and lorries with in-built refrigerated goods sections, but these dedicated vehicles are expensive and inflexible, since they are not suited for everyday movement of goods.
According to the present invention, there is provided a portable pallet unit adapted to be carried by a vehicle, comprising an insulated container, a refrigeration unit comprising an evaporator and a condenser, the refrigeration unit being provided with means for electrical connection to a battery of the vefficle, and further comprising a power management system which, in use, monitors and reduces or cuts off the power drawn from the battery when this falls below a predetermined level.
The present invention seeks to enable a haulier to carry chilled or frozen goods on a conventional distribution vehicle by supplying him with an insulated container which has its own independent source of refrigerated air. The condenser may be powered from a battery that may be charged by the engine of the distribution vehicle. The evaporator may be mounted in a recessed section inside the insulated container so as to allow airflow around product stored in the container. The condenser may be plugged into the battery power source via a retractable cable stored with the pallet. Built into the refrigeration unit may be a sensor that restricts the drawing of power from the battery in order to avoid damage to the battery or flattening of the battery. The insulated pallet may be designed primarily to take standard supermarket type trays. Access to the pallet may be by either an insulated curtain on the front face of the pallet or by access through a door or doors on the front face of the pallet or by insertion of a flexible insulated plug door. The size and dimension of the pallet may be determined by the temperature and product being carried. The refrigeration unit may be mounted on the back of the pallet. The pallet may be mounted on traditional pallet slots formed of glassfibre reinforced plastics (GRP) or aluminium or may incorporate a frame with lockable wheels. The pallet may be optionally powered from a mains supply through a converter so that the pallets can be connected to a power source whilst in an ambient or chilled store prior to loading onto a distribution vehicle. In order to assist the efficiency of the individual pallet, the system may be operated by the pallet being mounted in an insulated and chilled load space within a 1 vehicle, i.e. it would then be possible to carry a larger pallet load at frozen temperatures and the temperature external to the freezer unit would be lower than the normal ambient temperature. Such pallets will be designed to meet particular requirement of the end user. In certain applications it may be advisable to have an additional battery source in order to extend the number of units that can be carried on the distribution vehicle. It may be that this additional source of power is a split charge system including an additional battery and/or an additional alternator. Advantageously, the pallet is configured to allow product to be carried at temperatures between -25T and +15T. Miniature embodiments of the present invention may be used for carrying samples.
For a better understanding of the present invention and to show how it may be carried into effect, reference shall now be made by way of example to the accompanying drawings, in which:
FIGURE 1 is a perspective view of a pallet of the present invention; and FIGURE 2 is a partial section through the pallet of Figure 1.
Figure 1 shows an insulated pallet I mounted on a pair of GRP pallet slots 2 which allow easy handling of the pallet by a fork-lift truck or similar (not shown). The pallet I has an internal space 3 for storage of product (not shown), access to the internal space 3 being achieved by lifting an insulated curtain door 4 which may incorporate a magnetic strip seal 5.
Figure 2 shows the pallet I in partial section. An evaporator 6 including a fan 7 is provided on a rear wall 8 of the internal space 3, and is linked to a condenser 9 which is provided outside the pallet I and mounted on a rear portion 10 thereof. The condenser 9 and evaporator 6 are both electrically connected to a power supply unit 11 which in turn is electrically connectable to a battery (not shown) of a vehicle (not shown) in which the pallet I is to be transported, or alternatively to a mains supply (not shown) when the pallet I is located in, for example, a warehouse (not shown). The condenser 9 includes a power supply section 12 which is provided with a sensor 13 which detects when power is running low and which issues a warning signal and/or electrically disconnects the evaporator 6 and/or the condenser 9 so as, for example, not hilly to drain the battery. The fan 7 serves to circulate refrigerated air within the internal space 3.

Claims (12)

  1. CLAIMS:
    A portable pallet unit adapted to be carried by a vehicle, comprising an insulated container, a refrigeration unit comprising an evaporator and a condenser, the reffigeration unit being provided with means for electrical connection to a battery of the vehicle, and further comprising a power management system which, in use, monitors and reduces or cuts off the power drawn from the battery when this falls below a predetermined level.

  10. 10. A pallet as claimed in any preceding claim, ffirther including a converter adapted to allow the refrigeration unit to be powered from a standard mains power supply.
  11. 3 9 . 3 A pallet as claimed in any preceding claim, wherein the refrigeration unit is adapted to maintain a predetermined temperature within the insulated container, the predetermined temperature being in the range of -25'C to +1 5'C inclusive.
  12. 12. A portable pallet unit substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
